Yep...I must finally be getting acclimated because I agree.

Anyway...So my lovely bride had to be at Norton Brownsboro this morning at 0730 for an MRI. After her appointment she was getting off the Gene Snyder and back on I-71 NB and some jackass in a 4x4 pickup was riding her ass down the on ramp...So as she prepares to merge onto the interstate he pulls out and cuts her off as she's trying to get on...and then goes zooming off. Well 4 miles up the road, near the Crestwood exit, the same guy...along with two other trucks...are off the highway and stuck in the medium. I call that poetic justice.

My neighbors are actually shoveling their driveways right now...They must have got a couple of more inches than I did.

What I thought was interesting about the video was the skill that the driver of the bobtail semi used to avoid everything....guess skill does count for something. :)

That is one way of looking at it. I did not see much skill on the part of the rest of those seasoned Wisconsin drivers.

That's what I was thinking Will! I bet everyone of those speeders grumbled " no one knows how to drive on ice like I do!"
And what about those geniuses that got out of their cars and stood around?! Unbelievable!

You can only garner so much information from raw traffic cam video...but if I were a betting man I'd wager that (A) Most of those crashing cars were all Packer fans returning to Milwaukee from Green Bay and regardless of the video...given a choice...I'll take my chances on a snowy highway with a bunch of drunk Packer fans over an equal number of Louisville soccer moms (or dads). (B) What the video -doesn't- show is what precipitated the entire debacle...Which in this case I'm betting was a jack-knifed tractor trailer with Kentucky plates who's driver lost control when he took his eyes off the road to reach for his "spit cup".

Ok, so where is the outrage? Last time around, when I suggested that canceling school due to the threat of snow (not actual snow) and cold weather was absurd, I was paraded around town as a villain who would force unclothed children to stand for hours in sub zero temperatures to go to school.

But today (and yesterday) Jefferson and Oldham Co. schools are both open and temperatures have been in the teens or below. This morning it was 2 degrees when I got out of bed at 7AM. So where is the outrage that school has not been cancelled due to the frigid weather? There is snow on the ground. It is bitterly cold. And yet no one is demanding that school be closed?

What am I missing?

School closing decisions are based almost entirely on safety for school buses. If the roads are generally okay, temperature and the presence or absence of snow in the environment aren't particularly critical. The outrage generally comes when outer suburban roads are dangerous but streets in the city look okay, so folks in built-up areas look out and go "Whaaaa?" But the school district can't (or won't) cancel some without canceling all.

That's the way I understand it, anyway.

Back in the '90s, I had a job that required me to travel to all 50 states, and I drove rental cars, mostly, in every single one of them. I was fascinated to discover that the worst, meanest driving tended to occur not in the Deep South but the "Rustbelt," particularly around the Great Lakes. Northern Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, and then it got even worse in Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota. It's like getting behind the wheel leached the souls right out of some of those people.

I lived in Outer Borough NYC (Queens) and often drove, and we'd frequently run up to Boston and drive there. New Yorkers are pussycats on wheels, and even the notorious Boston drivers just didn't seem to have the mean streak that afflicted the folks in Snow Country.

Agreed. I have driven in many states and drove a truck in NYC for 5 years. The best drivers were NY drivers. The worst are the rust belt (IMHO).
