Actually yes we do. We won best large city conference destination by the conference business association. Its a huge money maker for our downtown area.

I personally brought the National Paddlesports Conference to town a few years ago and then helped Visitors Bureau by trying to sell Louisville to Nielsen Entertainment's production team to bring a new national outdoor retail b2b sales show to town.

Bingo. Thanks for pointing it out.

BTW, I have something new to add to this "bash Cordish" thread: Death to chains.

Every time the city subsidizes them more, that is new in my opinion.

Agreed. Let them fail. I've heard nothing but bad experiences about those folks from operators.

In spite of all the eye rolling I'm sure people will do with this statement, I miss the Galleria. I was at the opening in December 1982(1st Light Up Louisville) with my mother, and I thought it was pretty cool. I was 14, and my mom was of an age that remembered the grand old 4th St. We both thought the Galleria was a good thing and were hoping it would be a renaissance for downtown, but it just declined every year. After the end of the Galleria, I remember Cordish "guaranteeing" their concept would work. Well, maybe the concept they had in mind has worked, I don't know, but it isn't a very compelling place to tell people to go who are looking for something with Louisville flavor. There were several local people running businesses within the Galleria complex, including Schuhmann's Click Clinic, a family camera shop. I worked at the main one on Chestnut, where Meta will be. I'm looking forward to see how that is going to develop...

What was intended by this statement was that we don't have a huge contingent of out-of-town crowds attending conventions on a daily basis. Yes we have quite a few conventions downtown with large crowds but we certainly don't have them every day of the week nor every week and that's the kind of crowds that are needed for FSL to do well and thrive.

Is that busted up strip club still going to be there next to Meta when it opens? That place always looked super sketchy.

Mark, I would gently suggest that we pretty much do. A total of 12.7 million tourist visitors is about 35,000 per day, including work days, Saturdays and Sundays; and I THINK this refers primarily to regional traffic, not convention-goers.

and that's the kind of crowds that are needed for FSL to do well and thrive.

I think others have expressed better than I how much better it is for our downtown hospitality services to grow organically and locally than under the dubious guidance of an absentee corporation that may be losing interest because we won't legalize a downtown casino.

Isn't META moving INTO the super sketchy strip club?

We are moving in to ONE of the sketchy strip clubs. The former show and tell, which is the west most of the three. The Centerfold is also closed, but being renovated. We are currently working on a plan for the center space. The east most club, the Body Shop is still in business. They have been very nice thus far, and I don't anticipate either of our businesses affecting the other in a negative way.

As more and more comes together I will keep things updated. We are very excited and believe we are bringing some very exciting and fresh to the downtown area.

Centerfold was Abrigo's grocery, and what will be Meta was Schuhmann's Click Clinic. I hope you keep the cast iron spiral staircase. I haven't been by lately, but I also hope you manage to modify the old bellows camera sign again.
