In defense of decent pastors, is it possible this woman became ordained just to avoid paying income tax? It's certainly not unheard of. She has a congregation of 10 according to the article (not that a large congregation is required for one to be a pastor, but still) and her sermons seem to be nothing more than barely-coherent ramblings, based on what's been posted to YouTube.

Just a thought.

here the server in question speaks for herself.
of special note:

I assumed the customer's signature was illegible, but I quickly started receiving messages containing Facebook profile links and websites, asking me to confirm the identity of the customer. I refused to confirm any of them, and all were incorrect.

I worked with the Reddit moderators to remove any personal information. I wanted to protect the identity of both my fellow server and the customer. I had no intention of starting a witch-hunt or hurting anyone.

Pastors pay income taxes. Churches don't pay taxes, but their employees certainly do. My dad is a pastor, so I know. In fact, being a pastor is usually more of a burden than working for another employer; you essentially file as self-employed, so you pay both portions of the FICA tax.

Well, that last link pretty much confirms my opinion the server is not just a moron. She's a moron in denial.

There's a pretty good analysis on this in Nation's Restaurant News. At a glance, the article seems even-handed, and I think it makes Applebee's look halfway decent in the way it handled the corporate response:

A breakdown of Applebee's receipt controversy

Interesting to note how it covers very similar ground as DanB's post just above, but as a restaurant-industry trade journal, it gives a pro-Applebee's spin.

That said, props to Applebee's for apparently allowing open discussion on its Facebook page and not deleting critical posts.

30 posts. That's how long it took someone to mention it.

I can't understand why I was fired over this. I was well liked and respected at Applebee's. My sales were high, my managers had no problems with me, and I was even hoping to move up to management soon. When I posted this, I didn't represent Applebee's in a bad light. In fact, I didn't represent them at all.

I agree with basically everything the server has said except for the part above. She shouldn't have publicly posted that receipt if she wanted to keep her job.

The server knew exactly what she was doing and exactly what the outcome would be. She was just looking to secure her legend status on Reddit and that was worth more to her than her gig at Applebee's. Anyone familiar with Reddit, Fark, etc knows exactly what I mean. It has become a sport of sorts to post these receipts online, sometimes real and sometimes fake. They go on Reddit where they get multi-thousands of views. Then the story migrates to Fark, the Consumerist, Gawker, and so on until probably weeks later they finally end up on Huffington Post. By that time they get hundreds of thousands if not over a million views.

Now she's playing little Miss Innocent kind of like PeeWee Herman "accidentally" knocking over that row of motorbikes. "Gosh! I never meant THAT to happen. I tried weally, weally hawd to protect this pewson's identity". Yeah, right.

I see what you're saying, but how is that helping her financially?

Wow. You seem to be able to see right into this person's psyche. How do you do that?

Mike, because I'm all brilliant like that.

Gordon, what the Hell should I care about helping her financially? She just committed career Harakiri by her own self. Hopefully she'll learn an important life lesson about not shooting your own self in the foot. Actions.... they have consequences.

Ok fellers. Dead serious. There are two options here. Either 1) as a denizen of Reddit she knew exactly how viral this would go.... precisely like the other couple of dozen similar cases which went totally viral. In that case she's guilty of what I would call criminal mischief and is a moron to boot. Or 2) she's a denizen of Reddit and was completely clueless about how viral it would go. In which case she's also a moron.

Anyone here who is on Reddit knows it's 1). In either case she's a moron.
