and speaking of "Old Days Eats", anyone recall a small chain called "The Dobbs House"(es)? They had the drop-dead-undeniably-most-delicious slice of Black Bottom Pie. Best slice of pie I've ever eaten, to this day!

Yes . . . First Pryors, then Frisch's, then Arbys, then Tafel/Mini
was Waggener/St.Mathews Frisch's ever at that location? I was thinking that they were always at their current location?

Absolutely. Southwest corner of S-ville and Hubbards. I think it replaced the Pryors. I specifically recall eating there in 1967 as a team celebration after my high school basketball team beat a very heavily favored Male team, which was so cool because the school or coaches or somebody picked up the tab for all of us on the team. A "comped" meal was a big deal for a high school kid in those days. Definitely a Frisch's.

And a block further east (away from the St. Mathews Sears building) was a Jerry's Drive-In, although I don't remeember when it was built.
My memory's not as sharp as it used to be.

Jeffrey, *got* to tell you my story, as well!!
I was on the Waggener bball team in '63. Frisch's - thinking that if the players would show up after a game, so would the fans - sent a dozen BBoy gift certs to our equip mgr. After the game, he was giving out the certs, but 10 of the guys had dates and "other plans". That left two of us with all of the certs.
Off to Frisch's we go, "I'll have 6 Big Boys", said my teammate...."Same for me!", says I.
I don't think we ever got BBoy gift certs again!

Stepping back in the thread a little for a sec...

At first I thought Willie was thinking of the great old Toddle Houses - one on 3rd and one on Lexington (were there others?): fantastic ice box pies - as a kid I loved the butterscotch and the chocolate - and great waffles, and the best hash browns ever. It was carry-out and about ten stools. A great concept. At that same 3rd Street corner was Imorde's, a soup, salad, and sandwich place that would fit right into today's scene.

However, when I Googled "Dobbs House" I found out there was such a place on 4th - not much info, but its footprint looked only a little bigger than a Toddle House. Here the Streetview of the lot where it was. You can see the floorplan's ghost.

Actually, "Dobbs House" brings to mind the Dobbs House Tiki Room at Standiford Field. I loved that place as a kid. I always got the Kona Ice Cream - an incredible indulgence that featured flaming rum poured from a skull onto ice cream, bananas, pineapple and 'fruit nectar.' The waiter reassured my mother that the fire burned off the alcohol. Ha Ha. Scroll down to see the rest of the menu: http://www.tikiroom.com/tikicentral/bb/viewtopic.php?topic=3830&forum=1&start=45

I loved those places as well! Does anyone remember Lil' Abner's at Lexington and Grinstead Dr. (Now houses Jim Porters?) they had a 10 or 12 scoop undue served with sparklers and the house lights turned down. They called it The Nightmare Alice.

Carla, I (amoungst many others) had my name on the plaque above the door, there!
My memory, though fairly faded, was something like; one quart each of Choc, Strawb & Vanilla, about 6 bananas, a can of chopped nuts, a couple of cans of whipped cream, loadz of syrups, and - in order to get your name on the plaque - whatever melted while you were eating, was poured in to a milkshake glass and you had to drink that as well! It was "rite of passage"!!

Ken, I too remember the Toddle House(s), they were great!! But yes, it was the Dobbs House and there was one on Bardstown Rd., very near where the late Kingfish used to be. And my recollection is something like, Dobbs was actually mostly a catering company that had the contract for food services @ Standiford Field and a number of airlines. That would explain the Tiki Room connection. Like I said....*GREAT* black-bottom pie!

Scroll down to see the rest of the menu:

Ken, I can't believe that you actually found the menu for the Tiki Room at Standiford Field! Although I didn't grow up in Louisville, both sets of my grandparents lived here and I always visited during the summer. One of my aunts always took me there. I have no recollection of what I ate but remember that all the kids drinks all had umbrellas, or something, in them! Looking at their wine list now, it is a REAL "blast from the past"!!! Thanks for the memory.

It's amazing what you can uncover just noodling around on Google!

I have to weigh in on Lil Abner's. I remember the ice cream grotesquery as The Big Stanislauski (there may have been name changes in the menu after the place changed from Lil Abner's to something like just Abner's or something - no one had checked with Al Capp before the first name!)

The night my best friend and I performed in Atherton's talent show (we did a really stupid comedy routine), we celebrated at Lil Abner's and I consumed a Big Stanislauski (yep, drank the melted goo!) and got my name on the plaque - and a coupon for another BS. I invented a name for the plaque, K. Moop Wilson, and it became my nickname in college. I have friends who still call me Moop.

Oh, and yes, I went home and threw up.

The Toddle House chain was actually purchased by Waffle House. If you look at the menu when you go there you will see several items from the old Toddle House menu and they are identified as such!

Willie, that sounds like a typical Wildcat move. Warhawk here.

Are you sure it was a Frisch's in '63? It was Pryors in '62 and sponsored a team at St. Matthews Little League. I just don't remember when it went from Pryors to Frisch's.

Also, wasn't a Dobbs House also located on Brownsboro Road, where Barbara Lee's is now? Or was that something else 20 years before Barbara Lee's?

I was born in 1962, but I can remember Pryor's in St. Matthews. My grandparents lived in Beechwood Village and we were in St. Matthews all of the time. I think it went from Pryor's to Arby's. It doesn't make sense to have two Frisch's just blocks from each other.

There were no Fisch's "blocks from each other." The other Frisch's, the one at Bowling Blvd, wasn't there then. And, of course, Bowling Blvd. wasn't there then, either, I don't remember what, was between the Mall and Shelbyville Road Plaza (home of Levy Bros. and Sutcliffe's among others) in the 60's, but maybe not much. I'm thinking the Pryors became Frisch's in the mid-60's.
