For those interested in both sides of the issue, there may be some significant problems with a number of the assertions made in Forks Over Knives. Here's one critical review, though there are others: http://rawfoodsos.com/2011/09/22/forks- ... -critique/

If you're willing to learn, why do you keep pushing the hard line that DOESN'T exist? I seem to remember having this conversation with you not only in this thread but in another as well...so what do you want to learn? You aren't coming across as very willing to learn, but instead like I am talking to a brick wall who just keeps repeating the same thing.

RonnieD wrote:I am just trying to learn about the (non-health concerned) vegetarian mindset and why they crave the taste of something they denounce.
What is the vegetarian stance on sustenance hunters?

It's not an issue of "craving" meat...it's enjoying the "faux" meats because they provide a familiar texture...they really don't taste like their meat counterparts, as has already been brought up. They taste different - I enjoy their flavor. They also provide an easy way to get a large amount of protein and they are tasty. I fail to see why I should have to defend my choice to eat a faux sausage to you over and over again.

I'm not the vegetarian spokesperson, but I'm against sustenance hunting because you are still killing an animal that has sentience and a will to continue its life. That is my personal stance on it. There is no vegetarian spokesperson that I am aware of.

RonnieD wrote:And I'll not open the debate regarding sentience. There has been too much conflict hereabouts lately.

I don't think there's much debate surrounding the sentience of a cow or a pig versus the sentience of a soybean plant. False debate, perhaps, created by defensive omnivores struggling to find a "hole" in the ethics of a vegetarian who wasn't judging them in the first place.

I'm with Kari. The vegetarians who frequent this site have said the same things repeatedly in various threads. For those of us who do eat meat analogues, it's likely because we're looking for a) a good source of protein b) something quick to prepare c) something familiar d) something that tastes good (to me.). That's it.

Sooo flickin' good - no meat sub for that dish, Ronnie. Faux pulled chicken has yet to be tackled from what I've seen available, although I would applaud any effort :-).

Of course I have! :-) I've had it all (except the stuff in OP's link) and love it - been eating meat alternatives as long as they've been around.

Seitan makes a pretty darn good pulled BBQ...I think I could feed it to people and not tell them it wasn't meat and they wouldn't know.

So who's gonna open a Chick-Faux-La concept and cater to all the folks who've sworn off the real thing? :D
