YESSSS SIR! I forgot about them too! Just enough Lawry's Seasoned Salt on Ollie's fries make them the friggin' bomb!
Now I think I'm going to have to make special trip for an Ollie Burger w/ extra sauce and some of those tasty fries!

when I lived in Old Louisville I had a seriously dangerous Ollie's Trolley habit going. It was getting to be a problem.

Image They have far and away the best fast food fry out there...Too bad everything else on the menu pales in comparison.

I'm also a HUGE fan of the shoestring fries at Steak and Shake...

Yeah except we arent sure what they are made of anymore. The extras in Supersize me still bounce through my head. When the McD's fries did not break down and looked like they just bought them after 10 weeks of sitting out. I dont call that food. That's not good at all.

Dont want to get to far off tract here, but wanted to comment on the unfoodlike quality of McD. I like the fries as well but wanted to share a story about the burgers. We worked on a small tow boat in the great lakes and the captain would often buy a bag of a dozen or more cheese burgers and leave out on the deck with no refrigeration and consume them up to thirty to forty hours later. When I voiced concern over this, he said dont worry about it there is no real food in them anyway. Getting rather hungry on the boat one day I took the risk and put a couple back. I was surprised to see that they tasted about the same and I had no ill effects. Pretty funky.

fries

by Bill D » Tue Nov 06, 2007 1:45 pm

I'm a long way from home, but back in the day, early , one of my BF's GrandFathers (Greek)"not that it matters""starting cooking w/ sea salt & Pepper. He won won best in fries for "ever" in Big D mags. That is no easy feat an elititist clan like us. Try out "Burger House" next time to HAVE to be in Big D .KAUSTIBALQIS "til brings it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Penn Station

by Wayde H » Tue Nov 06, 2007 9:42 pm

I also agree that Penn Station has really good fries, however there is somewhere else that has extremely thin fries (thinner than Steak and Shake) that were awesome but I cannot think of where it was at.

As a side note...Mellillo's Alfredo Chips are the best fried potatoe food I have ever had.

Skinny fries

I just remembered that the thin fries that I was talking about were at Firefresh and covered in seasoning salt.

"In fact, it's well-known that McDonald's sprays a little sugar solution on their fries to make them golden brown ... and unusually palatable to children's tastes. Is this Good Eats?"[/quote]

Just came back from Memphis. Among other great restaurants (from Gus's Fried Chicken to both Rendezvous & Corky's plus others), we had brunch at The Beauty Parlor (an "in" restaurant located in a 1950-era beauty parlor, with original walls, chairs, et al). All the fries they serve are "sugar fries", so identified, and made with sprinkling with granulated sugar instead of salt! So, yes, from personal experience, this can be VERY good eats! (needless to say, they double fry correctly, et al) (had the fries with a BLTA sandwich - bacon, lettuce, tomato, avacado, with fried egg on top - it was brunch, after all)

There was a time when McD's had consistently good fries, but I haven't found that since the late 1980's at least. Nowadays, they're very hit and miss. And despite the sugar-solution, my boys both hate McD fries, they just will not eat them. I don't mind them, they're edible, but I never worry about finishing them.

My vote for the best in Louisville would have to be the sweet potato fries at Havana Rumba. I'm curious about Palermo Viejo--haven't had a chance to get there yet--but aside from that, I haven't had a fry in Louisville that can compare to Brugge Brasserie up in Indianapolis. You can make a meal of their frites alone. It's like a little island of Belgium in the middle of the midwest, both in terms of the frites and the delightful beers. (It should say something that we think nothing of doing the 100 mile drive just for lunch every now and then.)

Although I haven't had them in a really long time, Lyndon Lanes bowling alley had awesome crinkle cut fries. And I also remember Maier's in St. Matthews had good fries.
I also love the sweet potato fries at Mojito & the seasoned fries at Ollie's Trolley. They never seem to be very crisp, but the seasoning makes up for it. I would pay good money to find out the exact seasoning mix--I mean, how many other places use caraway seeds to season fries? Brilliant!

Being that Hubby spends much of his time in Belgium..... I have had my share of Pommes Frites. I told the oldest while at college to scout a small space to open a little Pommes Frites Kiosk. College towns are great for such a thing.

I am not sure we could pull it off here, but if anyone is interested.......

I could eat them breakfast, lunch, and dinner.!! ummm the sauces.

Indeed, those are hands down the best in the US. But Brugge is a lot closer, definitely worth the trip. They only do eleven sauces, compared to Pommes Frites, but they're all very good. (Their menu is here: http://www.bruggebrasserie.com/brassin.html.)
