From the time I married my husband we never bought anything but skim milk, it was what he liked he has always been a big milk drinker and I grew up with 2 percent I got used to it fairly easily...our kids never knew whole milk they were sooo upset when they got to school and had to drink"Red" milk they thought it was nasty.

First off, that school is lucky it wasn't my son, or there would have been hell to pay. The lunch sent by that mom was much healthier than the nuggets. Have they SEEN what's in those? Yuck! After seeing that pink goo, I will never eat fast food again. Second, regardless of whether milk is "necessary," I love it, and will continue drinking it until told otherwise by my Dr.

Sometimes I think our government is a joke. Other times I KNOW our government is a joke. If this had happened to my child, I might possibly be writing this from a jail cell.

This would be so laughable, if it wasn't so sad.......

I was simply pointing out that it's an isolated incident Not a government crackdown on our lunch freedoms, as some faux news readers will undoubtedly interpret it. I'm in no way threatened by fox or Obama. Or chicken nuggets.

I agree in general, but don't think we should demonize "government" as the bad guy when the problem clearly lies with a single imbecile. Government is us, and the parent has a right (and maybe a duty)!tomraise hell and get things fixed. Government is only "them" if we the people are passive and submissive. But complain in a practical way: Respond to the source of the problem within the system.

Who do we call to get chicken nuggets disapproved as a healthy lunch item? And the folks who actually like to feed their kids chicken nuggets for lunch? What about them? If we manage to get chicken nuggets disapproved, what do they do?

Do we have to arrange cage match every 2-6 years for control of the government? So at least the winners can have their kids fed how they want? At least until the next cage match anyway.

That's the problem with a hugely powerful and intrusive government, there's only one set of winners on any particular issue. A smaller government, increases freedom, and everybody can win. This is what we used to call "live and let live". Now we are a nation of busybodies, financed by China.

Sweet Jayzus! We're talking about an overbearing lunch lady, a situation that any reasonably confident parent ought to be able to handle with a visit to the principal! It's a mighty long stretch to take that to national government.

As for the "small government" thing, the Southern states tried that argument in 1860, and they tried it again in the 1960s. We saw what came of that. :P

Considering Congress allowed pizza to be considered a vegetable I don't think there's much chance of getting chicken nuggets disapproved :!:

Did you miss the part where the funding was supplied by the Federal government? Or that the inspections of home-made lunches were required by that same government? Or the fact that the parent had to complain to a State Representative to be taken seriously?

Fine, you support a huge government. Is the government still too small to suit you? Can you articulate any principled limit to government authority or regulation?

And here's a few more thoughts...

What if the disallowed lunch just had a baloney sandwich and chips, No cheese, no whole grain bread, no milk. We all know that some children are picky eaters, so suppose this is all the kid would eat.

This would not be a valid lunch under these government guidelines. So what happens?

The school forces the child to buy a school lunch everyday. It goes uneatened, and the kid just has their baloney sandwich and chips. The parent complains about continuing to pay for the uneatened school lunch and refuses to pay anymore.

What happens then?

Does the child get removed from the parents custody for not making an approved lunch?
Is a lien place on their house so that the dept for uneatened school lunch will get paid?
Would the parents wages be garnished to pay for the uneatened school lunches?
Would the kid be punished somehow for never eating their approved school lunch?
Would there by mandatory counseling with social workers and dietitians?
Would the school just ignore the madates of the Federal government?
Would some bureaucrat in Washington have to approve a waiver?

Seriously, what would happen?

The parent talks to the principal. The principal talks to the crazy lunch lady. The crazy lunch lady stops hassling kids who bring in healthful lunches. Things get sorted out with the application of a little common sense on the local level, where you and I both like it. But it's not a matter of legislation or force, just a matter of good people sitting down together and working things out. That's the way it happens in the real world, as opposed to the world of OMG LOOK AT THIS on Fox News.

Kids whose parents send them in with three candy bars and a pack of Twinkies? I'm fine with the school stepping in to give them something more healthy. Personally, I wish it was something less industrial than nuggets, but as Chef Dan has pointed out, in the Louisville schools, at least, chances are it will be.
