Have you ever been to a Waffle House? ;)

Hehe!

I have to admit, though, that when I'm traveling I get a kick out of a Waffle House visit- preferrably in the most rural exits possible. I love soaking in the 'ambience,' if you get my drift- Elvis Presley on the jukebox, truckers and local flotsam and jetsam.

There just seems to be a certain rawness to it, a humility that makes me smile.

Yes - totally get that experience.

Yes I have been to Waffle House and I would say they have some pretty good hash browns, eggs, and toast......well apparantly as good as Toast......so if you want to bring Toast down to their level of bring Waffle House up....it really doesn't matter. I just would rather not wait for a plain run of the mill breakfast.....

I tried Toast for two reasons.....we like to try new places and the line there the previous day got my attention. I remember we waited at Lynn's and the place overwhelmed me with the great items on their menu.....and even though we waited we came back the next day to experience more of their menu.

Toast did not do this for me so I posted the question....what is up with Toast and no one really came out and gave a good explanation.....so....we probably won't go back.

The specialty potato side at Toast is a casserole dish clearly made well in advance and served slightly above room temperature with an ice cream scoop. Any hash brown dish at Waffle House is superior if you can overlook the flat top lube. I was told that I could enjoy free coffee during my hour-plus wait; unfortunately, I brought the cup to the table and the waitress kindly added it to my bill without asking.

I love Toast: chorizo and white cheddar omelet. I like Wild Eggs and North End for breakfast as well, but I'd go to Toast first.

If all you get at a breakfast place is bacon and eggs, nothing is going to stand out or be worth the wait. Toast has some great items on the menu - Monte Cristo and The King french toast, lemon souffle and bread pudding pancakes, South of the Border omelette, Breakfast Manhattan - all of these are things I can't or wouldn't make at home, and with the possible exception of the omelette, none of it is on the menu at any of the other breakfast spots in town.

Has anyone mentioned that NorthEnd is on opentable and you can reserve your breakfast table with no wait? SOLD.

Yes. To answer the poster's question I have no idea what is up with Toast. I have never had a bad experience there. The service is always great and the food always consistent. I do, however, avoid it during busy times and try to go on "off" hours if possible.

I'll add Huevos Ahogados to that list. My favorite breakfast dish and I don't know of any other place in town that offers it. On top of that, the service has always been exceptional every time I've been there. I my opinion, George runs a good restaurant that doesn't deserve the type of slamming I'm seeing in this thread.

And you can always call ahead for seating. I call as soon as we get out of church on Sundays, and by the time we get there for lunch our wait has gone from an hour or more to 15 minutes, tops.

I don't have a dog in this fight and feel the OP, but may I also add that breakfasts are BRUTAL.

It takes a special bird to serve this meal. No cocktails or appetizers to provide pre-meal contentement. No Amuse Bouche' to buy the kitchen a warning a 15-top just went down. Just a wham-bam-thank-you-mam. You (the entire staff) can't be tired or firing on too few cylinders- it becomes painfully obvious, quick.

There's absolutely no buffers one can use! The leanest of hospitality plays- if the kitchen gets weeded, your screwed. The new hostess gets in over her head- your screwed. The busser walks out- your screwed.

And, by virtue, the price point is the cheapest of the meal services- so not worth it for a night owl, like myself.

Someone once asked me if I would be interested in doing a breakfast concept. My response- 'hand me the gun, let's get it over quicker.'

Yes! Highland Morning is great. I have really enjoyed the food. I am addicted to the Baja Benedict (previous poster referred to it as "Southwest.") It's an amazing meal. The sauce is fantastic, and I've never had a bad one. That's my order of choice there. I'm so glad I don't have to leave the neighborhood for a great breakfast option.

We had a pretty bad experience the last time we went to Toast. It was a Sunday morning at about 11:30. The service was "spotty", to say the least. There was a problem with each of our three orders. And the TOAST was terrible - served stone cold and without any butter.

We tried Highland Morning early on a Sunday morning a few weeks ago and loved it. Great menu, delicious food and excellent French press coffee. The only problem that I see with them is their limited seating capacity.

Imagine that, spotty service at 11:30 on a Sunday morning.
