Physics guy here, so really it is just conservation of energy. Energy in = Energy out, and you'll have equilibrium (no weight gain). That said, it is just taking in the correct amount of energy. We measure food energy in Calories.
I have found that exercise is a critical component; not only because it burns calories, but because results in an increase in your metabolism, so you'll burn calories faster even when you're not eating. Also, exercise can be downright FUN! As a side benefit, it also produces chemicals in your brain that make you happier. Plus, being fit is very conducive to overall happiness. Who wants to get tired just walking down the street?
I lift weights three times a week (not excessively, only about half an hour per workout). And I go to karate classes 2-3 times per week ( a combination of traditional karate + full-contact sparring + jiu jitsu). Plus I run around with my two kiddos daily (they're 2 and 8 years old - a handful!)....
That exercise leaves me needing to eat more, not less, in order to maintain a good healthy weight.
But really, the key is finding exercise that you actually like. It is different for everyone. I rock out when lifting weights, and my martial arts training is pure fun for me. Exhausting but fun. When you discover the workouts you like, then it is a win-win situation.
