?

I was being serious. At this point i'm curious to get to the bottom of the story. If these guys are expecting 30% tip and $50 handshakes from every table, i won't be dining there anymore. I know some people tip excessive there, but it was not my understanding that it was the norm.

Jason, could you please share with us what your last dining experience at Jeff Ruby's was like?

I loved the Steak I had, it was well prepared ,seasoned well. I was worried that the carry over cooking process would make my steak well done upon the first cut, but wrong! It was cooked perfectly, and stayed at the right temp until I took the last bite.

I don't much care for TV news, no matter which way they lean... and they all lean one way or the other. Which is OK, IMHO. It's that whole "Marketplace of ideas" thing.

Now, sorta back on topic...

I've followed this thread, and I'm trying to learn how to better share my dining adventures. The last time I tried posting about a couple of my poor restaurant experiences, Robin talked to me like he was negotiating with a crazed gunman holding hostages.

I'm really not that scary.

I take it you're now finished with this topic.

I'll follow up on my own.

Also, if someone posts here regarding their restaurant experience, folks should try to avoid the "witch hunt" approach as to whether the poster is telling the truth. I find it highly insulting that my word is not good enough.

Eliza, The diner did not have an alcoholic drink, and failed to mention that in my original post.

Heather I don't see how my dining experience at JR has anything to do with this at all. Why would you ask that?
Once again, I never questioned your word as is clearly stated in all of my posts. I believe I have already apologized for anything you may have misconstrued as a slight.

Sounds like an episode of the Soprano's where a waiter complained to Pauley and Christopher about the size of the tip. Different outcome, they killed the waiter.

Why is it that I share my dining experience here, and ask those who have responded about their dining experiences at JR's no one is willing to share? I want to compare notes, isn't anybody willing to share with me? I accept all apologies, I am not THAT thin skinned, nor do I need anyone to come to my defense by further investigating. However, if I did want a further investigation into an insolent little brat's behavior, I have no problem marching myself into that establishment, and talking to the manager.

It's not my fight, I was just sharing the experience.

I've eaten twice at Ruby's. One time I thought it was pretty good, but flawed by some problematic experiences like lamb requested rare and served raw. Yes, raw. Seared on the outside, raw about 1/4 inch in. The second time was at a larger private group function and I thought everything was excellent for straightforward steakhouse fare.

I see Ruby's as a good place to impress unadventurous clients and a "safe" place to take guests who aren't looking for the kind of experience you'd find at Seviche, 610, Corbett's ... provided you bring plenty of money. It reminds me of similar places in New Jersey and NYC's Outer Boroughs where limos line up at the door to discharge their passengers.

Robin, Really? didn't get the whole "Goombah" feel..., hmmm funny you should go there.

Had I known that was the setting, I might have asked my dining companions to choose another venue in order to celebrate Hannukah.

It just seemed vague for the person to say they tipped 18 - 20%. It's possible for a nice person who is usually a good tipper to make a mistake, get called on it, and be too embarrassed to admit the mistake. I'ts also possible the server was an entitled jerk.

We do not know either person involved. We did not witness the event so considering both possibilities is not siding with either. It's more of a "hmmm, why would someone behave like that" study of human nature.

Review: It's been a few years since I've been. I took my two sons and one daughter. (Oldest son's 20th birthday.) I thought the table was uncomfortably small for four people. The booth had enough room for us to sit but the table did not have enough room for everything.

I didn't like having to hold the menu up in the air to read it - no room to set it on the table. It was also not conducive to conversation since we were all facing outward instead of across from each other.

The food was excellent. I think I had a carafe of wine. I was the only adult so I'm sure I didn't get a whole bottle and didn't have any other drinks since I was driving. The service was very good. I tipped $70 on a $300 (after tax) meal. (I wrote about it somewhere else at the time so I had a record of the cost and tip.)

It was good, not so good that I want to drive downtown when I can walk to Z's.

We took our boys to Jeff Ruby's for their graduation dinner. They're not twins - we're a blended family. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the food. My review is more on the waiter. I was recovering from a nasty stomach thing. I told him upfront what the issue was. He said, "No problem. You can try a side dish or even just sit there and drink water. It really doesn't matter to me."

I thought that was such a great attitude. He seemed sincere even if he was secretly cursing me. The mashed potatoes were good and we left a nice tip. :)

I have only been once, to the location inside Belterra Casino, and we always leave a tip in the ballpark of 20%...I just move the decimal point one to the left and multiple by two, and round up if need be. We had no problems. The food was good and we only ended up spending about $30 because we shared several appetizers and left stuffed.
