For me, then, the biggest miss would be Zephyr Cove. I grew up in Ashland, not exactly the bastion of fine dining, and then went to college in Danville, also a place lacking in dining options. I dated a girl from Louisville during college, and it was on trips here to visit her family that I was first exposed to the Louisville dining scene.

I remember going to a lot of places with them, including Lilly's, Ditto's, and Captain's Quarters, but Zephyr Cove was her dad's favorite and thus our most frequent destination. I can truly say that it was the meals there that sparked my initial interest in all things food. I have very fond memories of that restaurant, including spending three New Years Eve's in a row there.

This would have all been around 2000 to early 2003.

I miss Omar's, Red Pepper, and Hero's, as well.

I will add that the closing of the Goose Creek Seviche was a terrible blow to the East End and to me. We still make it to Bardstown Road but not nearly as frequently. Fortunately...they still kick major league ass at the original location.

I've refrained from posting my opinion til now but I have to agree with you Dave. I don't think I've ever missed any restaurant as much as I miss Deitrich's. The food quality and originality (and service) was a solid 10. The real reason I miss it was because of its ability to transport me someplace else when I walked in. The atmosphere was so reminiscent of Europe, so old worldly. I loved sitting at a sidewalk table in the early evening with a meal and a bottle of wine watching the neighborhood, the traffic, the people.

I always miss Melillo's. I've searched and searched and nothing comes close to replacing it. I really need some rice balls and eggplant right now.
