Good point. I switched to Mathes in NA a few years back, and do not miss the big boys at all.

I used to like the Twig and Leaf, but have been put off permanently ever since witnessing a worker behind the counter warming up a serving of biscuits and gravy in the microwave oven, then poking it with his finger to see if it was warm enough yet. This incident happened after I had just eaten an earlier serving of biscuits and gravy. It was seven or eight years ago, but my stomach still turns every time I think about it.

Fortunately or unfortunately workers touch and handle food with their hands and use microwaves. Probably better done out of sight from the diners but if that makes your stomach turn there is no since in dining out because it's common and not any type violation as long as workers are using clean hands.

Thanks for linking to and posting the article. It's heartening to see intelligent conversation about this (particularly from restaurateurs who know what they're talking about), as opposed to that on the, ahem, other sites that later picked up the story.

My big concern is not the potential loss of its cuisine, but the 'gain' of yet another chain. I live around the corner from the Twig and it's hard enough to turn on/off of Princeton; putting a CVS on the Douglass corner would make things even worse. The Fifth Third 'drive through' area is already inconveniently accessible via one way only; heaven knows how the average driver would navigate this new construction a block or so down.

Of course, anything having to do with food leads to a visceral reaction, whether people love or hate the place. I intend to be at the meeting tomorrow for a follow-up article, but I think what it ultimately will come down to is how much Zaremba is willing to pay. Everyone can be bought. Two storefronts are empty, one (Dundee Candy) has relocated in the recent past and frankly the Twig and Leaf's management hasn't seemed very enthusiastic about pleasing their customers for some time now.

In case anyone's interested, Louisville.com now has an article about the public meeting, and a shot of an artist's drawing of the corner.

Thanks all.
