Norma Jean's will be closed the 4th also. Not very busy with everyone at the lake or grilling out. Also we are closing the Tuesday before and we are normally closed on Mondays. This gives all of us a much deserved 3 day vacation. I get to take my son camping, I can't wait.

Okay, maybe I'm just oblivious, but I'm a little surprised to see so many "name" restaurants closing for the Fourth. Am I wrong, or is this a recent development? I don't think of the Fourth as the kind of "family holiday" like Thanksgiving or Christmas on which most restaurants have closed in the past.

If I'm right that more places are closing, then the obvious follow-up is why? Is the business getting soft enough that people figure it's not worth staying open on a possibly slow evening? Or is there some fear that the few remaining pro-Iraq War partisans will raise hell with a business that doesn't support the troops by honoring a patriotic day? Or am I just thinking too much?

Okay, fair enough. I invited that. :D

But then, why ARE so many name eateries closing?

Anticipation of slowed business due to many people doing the 'Family' thing or get togethers with neighbors or even event like the 2 day thing on the Waterfront. I know where I live not too many people venture out to eat. Primarily at home with guests.

Closed July 3 & 4

by Gena W. » Tue Jun 26, 2007 5:27 pm

Come Back Inn (Louisville) will be closed on the 3rd and the 4th to take advantage of a long weekend. We tried being open on the 4th for for first few years of biz, but decided to close due to lack of participation from the customers end :D .

Robin, Melillo's is closing because of an extremely low customer base. We opened two years ago on the 4th and had nearly no visitors to the East Market location. We figured it was because we had recently relocated to this spot and people weren't venturing out on the holiday. We opened last year and had the same result. We decided this year that it was just a good business decision to be closed on this day. And in addition to that, restaurant staffs appreciate an unexpected day off. They work very hard and deserve to spend time with their families when they least expect it. With that being said, I do support our troops, but not our president!

Well said, Michele. Thanks for the explanation!

I think the Fourth is just a "backyard" kinda family day. Play in the sprinkler, fire up the grill, wander out to a fireworks show.

And we've already established that a large number of people certainly don't want to get dressed up to go out anywhere. OK, sorry about that last part.

Robin -- this is our 5th summer selling to restaurants and July and August are ALWAYS slow months because of family vacations and such. A lot of our restaurants take vacation this time of year so that they can enjoy time with THEIR families.

PErsonally, I think of the 4th as a family holiday for relaxing, cooking out, and watching fireworks.

And yes, I agree, you were thinking too hard about the reasons.
