People can call these "huge' beers "pushing the brewing envelope" if they want to...I just call 'em silly. Just MHO.

Beyond a certain point, it's sheer exhibitionism. To me, that point is in the low teens in terms of abv. 15% is pushing it.

Personally I feel that way about almost everything Avery brews, so my # is lower than 15%. Still will probably make it to Gravity Head, just will be hitting the "lower end" beers, you know in the 10-12 range.

I'm actually okay with some exhibitionism. Dogfish's Raison d' Extra and 120 minute come to mind as super-high gravity beers that are quite good (for sipping). They're like the Bismarck: lots of firepower, but enough body to back it up.

On the other hand, the Tactical Nuclear Penguin et al are more akin to the HMS Hood and other battle cruisers. They wanted to pack as much punch into it as possible, but didn't pay any attention to the weaknesses.

The average abv of the starters for Gravity Head is right at 10. I believe there are only two above 13%.

This reminds me of the guy who used steriods so much his biceps exploded. If their only goal is to make the strongest beer it will most likely taste horrid. A beer like that may take years to develope, much less mature. I would think 5 years in a barrel might make it approachable. It is a race to get as far away from beer as possible and still call it beer. IMO it is all for the free PR.
