St. Joe's in Butchertown is our fish fry destination because they have HUSH PUPPIES, and really good fish. But for me, it's all about the hush puppies.

Gotta love the Catholics. The priorities are straight .. fish and beer. Doesn't hurt to have a few pull tabs close by. God is great.

PS: don't bash.. I was raised Catholic and have grand kids at Trinity.

I don't think it's only during lent, and it's not a church, but there is a little place right where 3rd Street and Southern Pkwy. branch off that I've been told has the best fried fish in the world on Saturday nights. Does anybody know anything more about this place?

Laura, whoever told you that was exactly right, The Suburban Social Lodge is a Masonic (I believe) men's club and they fry up fish green river style. It is beyond excellent! I have been going there with my family since I couldn;t even see over the counter. Prior to the relatively new location at Southern Parkway, there was a very small spot near the former American Air Filter plant...this was all displaced by PJ's Stadium. Give this place a try. DD

Thanks for the input, Derrick! I really do want to try that place. So it is just a Saturday thing? Even during Lent?

I also vouch for the Suburban Social Lodge. You can buy the fish by the pound to go; they'll even sell you a loaf of rye bread.

Our Mother of Sorrows on Eastern by Preston has the holy grail: not only fish but hush puppies AND mac and cheese. Sadly, we got there too late for both last Friday.

Rob_DeLessio wrote:St. Patrick out in the far east end on North Beckley Station, had a fish fry last night, and will do so for the next four Fridays...it's from 5-8....I am likely biased, but I firmly believe that they have the best fish sandwich of all of them....They are using a North Atlantic cod, cutting and breading it all themselves....they are using panko....it is some awesome stuff, check it out. Also they have thick breaded onion rings, and huge steak fries as well.

OK, we're Methodists so we don't have a stake in this but we decided to go to Saint Patrick's to try their fish fry. It would probably some of the best fish we've ever had! The portions are very large and in addition to the fish ) fried and baked) they have some very good fried shrimp, some excellent French fries as well as fried mushrooms, onion rings, coleslaw, macaroni and cheese..... Definitely worth the short trip outside of the Snyder.

:( They are closed for the season. They are open only on Saturday's during the season. I believe they get things started back up after Easter, for some reason. I guess they don't want to compete with the fish fry's but there is no competition with their fish, except maybe The Fish house which does the same "green river style". A definite Louisville institution. Get a side of onions if you go.
