Steve, I was staring down at the road and going 5 Mph for 2 hours with a Wal-Mart Tractor Trailer performing Fantasia on ice in front. So,yes. Taylorsville Rd from Gene Snyder to J-Town was a popsicle.

Sorry. I'm still a bit edgy from people cutting off a tractor trailer on a down slope and having the thing fishtail 30 feet in front of my car. He's making room for a REASON people. Not to let you in, but to prevent smashing into one of your cars.

Shit went downhill in a hurry. The roads were not great at 6:30, but easily drivable, but by 7:30 they had froze over and all hell broke loose.

I'm so glad the state turned over the maintenance of the main roads to better government! They're so much better than the state did. They only brined the bridges and overpasses and didn't worry about the roads! I guess they want to pocket as much money as possible out of the deal.

Actually the brine melted the snow which refroze with the temp dropped. But, I will pass your thanks along to the guys!

Why did they use brine when they should have used salt? I lived for my first 30 years in Chicago and I guarantee we would have a new mayor if this had happened up there. Anybody remember how Jane Byrne got elected? They had plenty of notice and blew it, just like they did a few weeks ago. It was barely below freezing if they had used enough salt it wouldn't have refrozen at all.

I agree. I was out yesterday morning, going from Crescent Hill to a dental-cleaning appointment on Bardstown near Assumption High School. People were driving sane, but a few bad spots - the Seneca Park Road next to Bowman Field (and Le Relais ;) ) was a skating rink, totally blocked by spinouts.

A modification to the conventional wisdom here: Any idiot should be able to drive in moderate snow. But anybody who thinks he can drive safely on road ice is an idiot.

Ditto.
A little snow isn't much of a problem but ice, unless you have chains or studs (and almost no one south of the Ohio River owns those) is next to impossible I don't care how mad you think your driving skills are. 1 1/2 hours down LaGrange Rd (146) yesterday that normally takes 20 minutes. Plenty of nuts out there going over the speed limit thinking the roads were just wet and not icy.

Why can't we use stuff like sand or dirt that would provide traction w/out the refreezing factor? Maybe it just works for places that the snow doesn't melt off until spring? It would require street clean up after the thaw, but surely would be easier on my paintjob!

I've never been so happy my husband was sick in my life. I looked outside and figured we'd gotten a dusting. I had no idea that my entire drive to work would be like "Cars on Ice." I saw school buses fishtail, cars slide, several "almost" accidents...I've never been so happy to get to work in my life. My drive is 5 minutes. My husband's drive is 15-20 minutes, over windy roads, several overpasses, and a big old bridge.

It may give us traction , but I don't believe either one is capable of melting snow/ice. I've seen them use loose sand and dirt in areas while living in New Albany, but imagine to prevent freezing; they use salt?
