I have never heard of this being done, and never did it as a hostess. The only time I could imagine it being okay is if the 4 tables had been notified before being seated that they had a time limit on the table. For example, if it were 6:00, and all the tables in the place were filled, and these last 4 tables had a large party that was coming at 7:00 so they would all need to be pushed together. If the folks just coming in were notified that they could either wait for other tables to open up, or take these open tables for one hour, then and only then could I see it being okay to 86 them from their seats once the large party had arrived and were ready to be seated.
