In all seriousness, it is all about hydration. Water works fine. Or something similar, like gatorade. Several large glasses, and you'll be fine.

Hair of the Dog, (drinking more in the morn), also works somewhat.

Food does nothing.

Before you go to bed, drink a big glass of water, take an Advil and a vitamin B supplement. Works like a charm.

I disagree. Food definitely plays a role. Other than experiencing one while dehydrated, there is nothing worse than a hangover with an empty stomach. Food is often an instant relief.

For the hydration side of things, water would be my 2nd choice after Gatorade. It's one of those products that athletes actually use for a reason. It doesn't hydrate as efficiently as water, but it's easier to drink more Gatorade than water, generally leading to better hydration. Eggs work because they contain cysteine which is an amino acid that breaks down acetaldehyde (the chemical believed to cause hangovers) & converts it in to an acetic acid, which is far less harmless to the stomach & liver. They also contain vitamin B12 which is very helpful with over-consumption. As a matter of fact, if you're not hydrating & getting the proper amount of cysteine when you're having a hangover, you're actually potentially causing more damage to your liver than is necessary. Read this if you're interested in why you actually get a hangover in the first place.

Eggs are a very old hangover remedy that people have been using since the 1800s in Europe, if not longer. That doesn't necessarily prove anything, but the scientific literature/studies seem to indicate that eggs do actually help.

That's a prevention, not a cure, John. 8)

...then perhaps the board should be renamed "hangover treatments", since cures imply preventing a recurrence, and not drinking would certainly provide that...

I don't know about anyone else..but when I've been hungover the last thing I could have eaten was eggs.
Off course, i'm a light weight that can't really even drink anymore.
But I grew up in So. Arizona and know many many people who swear by Menudo as being a cure. But again, I couldn't eat that either..

Becky and I and a cast of shady characters we call friends got into a BIG throw down with the better part of a pony keg of NABC Hoptimus on New Years Day...Becky chugged 3 or 4 big glasses of water before going nighty-nite and woke up Saturday morning feeling great. I didn't drink any water before bed and spent most of the day Saturday hitting the Advil bottle and whining and sniveling like a little 8 year old boy who didn't want to go to school.

Just drink some water. Jeez. Yeah, gatorade is better. I don't know about the egg science, but seems like a round-a-bout way.

when i saw this thread, the first thing i thought of was an egg mcmuffin. the morning i had my first hangover, we stopped by wack arnold's. i ate an egg mcmuffin and it worked almost instantly. i've stuck by this method ever since. it's interesting to have read the science behind it. thanks michael!
