And to build on Jackie's comments, we called ahead to Mojito and gave them a heads up that we had a vegan and a vegetarian in our party. You should have seen the food our vegan got. FABulous.

And you can't keep that to yourself for this one thread that OBVIOUSLY and honesty leads in with a beseech for vegan advice? I'm insulted as an advisor. Your bacon jokes are not funny when they're at the expense of a human and non-imflammatory voice.

That bothered me too Jackie, but I was even more bothered by the response from someone I know to be a restaurant professional who has been actively seeking the support and business of the forumites [quote]by Alison Hanover » Tue Dec 08, 2009 9:39 am . . . I'm not a vegan, but I could easily live my life without butter, bacon and or any pork product. I don't, but I could. I could not live my life without olive oil or seafood, however. Nor can I imagine but down someone else for the food choices.

You two are bothered because I made a joke? So someone's choice to be vegan is more important or serious than my choice not to be? I can't make tongue in cheek comments on here any more? Veganism is a choice, it's not a genetic disposition or affliction. I mean, I didn't make fun of someone's lactose intolerance or food allergy. Lighten up.

Next thing we know, we'll back on smoking. Then it can get REALLY vicious.

Meanwhile: What about the Swan Dive? My sales adjutant informs me that there is much resonably priced vegan there, although I haven't yet been.

Please everyone, stand down! The thought that we would start to polarize food discussion in some arcane manner of meat vs vegetable is absurd to me. We all eat. Celebrate what we eat and what our great restaurants provide before questioning the motive for why we eat what we do. Let the uninitiated or unsung virtue of both be heard but stay the derision. I worship at the altar of roast carrots but also sanctify the ribeye that accompanies them. It's like bitching about the strings being better than the horns in the symphony. Why? Moderation was the key well before politicization of the word. Peace!

For the record, I wasn't offended by the bacon joke......

We minorities are pretty used to it. Especially in progressive locales like Kentuckiana. God, Guns and....hmmm not sure what goes next. No,but seriously, it really doesn't bother me.

p.s. the only issue for me going from Vegetarian to Vegan was giving up cheese. Other than that it is pretty smooth sailing by just looking at food labels. It can make dining out more of a pain though, whether at a restaurant or at a friend's place. It took my grandmother ten years to finally figure out that chicken isn't vegetarian!

p.p.s. For anyone curious, I'm vegan (and vegetarian) for health, environmental, and ethical reasons. I think I'd do it for any one of the three alone, but the triplet puts it way over the top for me.

Cheers everyone!

Maybe you should make that your campaign slogan. You will be sure to win over some of the more progressive people in the area.

It was meant to be a light hearted remark to cover up my stupidity for advocating the bacon and hummus gyros. Darn, when did we all get so serious. Vegetarianism I can easily understand. I haven't eaten a steak for over 35 years. I very seldom eat meat (apart from bacon that is) Veganism is something different entirely. You are removing entire food groups from your diet, and unless it is for health reasons, then I have to admit I think it is kind of silly. That is my opinion and I am sure some people will agree with me and some will disagree. What is wrong with eating eggs for instance. If you don't eat the chicken and you don't eat the eggs, then what is the point of them? I will agree with Nimbus that cheese would be very difficult to give up. It is my favourite food of all. Meat, take it or leave it, but please leave my cheese alone.

If some people here really get bent out of shape because of this thread, then I'd hate to cut them off in traffic.

The Swan Dive may be a good option. It's very affordable.
