Back in the days when WF was buying up local natual food stores and operating them under their old names, I worked for WF (under the name of Wellspring). Yes, they were a big corporation, and, yes, they had a lot of anti-worker big corporate policies, but compared to any of the other local stores, they were very good to their employees. A health plan was available, and I could have purchased it on my wages, but my university's health plan was cheaper. We were given breaks in a comfortable environment, we were given a substantial corporate discount, and we were encouraged to eat for our own health. We were given a small share of profits in addition to our wages (which were already a couple of bucks above minimum wage). Our immediate bosses treated us like human beings, and I'm pretty sure that attitude was encouraged by the corporate head office.
Now, this was many, many years ago, so things might have changed, but they were, on the whole, fairly good. Yes, I hated the rah-rah "team spirit" garbage they fostered (no one was buying that we were in it together with the multi-millionaire Mackey, at least not in our liberal college town). But by and large they were okay. Certainly not bad enough for me to boycott the company.
Oh, and my immediate boss, a large, native American woman, was promoted to headquarters and moved to Texas. She worked her way up from clerk to management. You don't see a lot of that at other groceries.
Sooo....since I like a place where I can get local grass fed lamb and growlers of local beers, I'm going to continue shopping there, even if the boss and I disagree.
