Not to totally derail this thread, but that reminds me of a pet peeve of mine. I hate how the martini/cocktail list at restaurants often has no prices. I was at a nice restaurant last weekend, and they had prices on the wine list but none on the martini list. Why do they do that? I feel like a big goober asking how much a martini costs, but if I don't ask, I might have a heart attack when the check comes out. :(

There is no explantion other than taking advantage of customers. We got the shaft at Fox and Hound over the lack of prices on the menu for the cocktails and have never went back, $2 beers and $9 mixed drinks. $9 isn't all that out of line at a nice place, but at a chain sports bar it is crazy. We weren't drinking 10 year bourbon either. No one want to look cheap by asking the price of every drink on the menu, so we just ordered what we wanted. 20 drinks over the course of the night (4 people) and we were left with a suprising bill, and their food sucks.

While I agree with the not-listing-of-the-alcohol-price complaint, you always have the option of asking. Sure you might look like a goober, but it's your right.* When prices are not on a website, I'm not sure what I am supposed to do. Call? Then what's the point of a website?

FWIW, I was at the MonkeyWrench last night and really really liked how the on-tap beers were not only prominently displayed on a chalkboard but each one was listed with a price. Nice touch.

*Not to further derail the thread, but, knowing how much we talk about tipping around here, I wonder how a server feels about a customer's tipping potential when they ask a price on a drink.

I also agree. I can somewhat understand many web pages, especially for seafood restaurants where shipments arrive daily with new pricing, but even there I appreciate Mitchell's and some others who give a "representative" menu to demonstrate prices.

What really bugs me is when a waiter recites the daily specials, eliminating pricing. I always ask - it has never stopped me from ordering a special, but I just don't like post-dinner surprises. And, I can't tell ou how many times I've asked for the prices only to be told that the waiter will "have to check on that" for me.

Hmmm ... on a website for a brand new restaurant, who makes everything in the store from scratch; who just opened on Tuesday; I think I can forgive them for not posting their prices. I'm sure that, depending on the cost of goods, prices will change until they find what will work for their business. I'm also fairly certain that, with a new business, they wouldn't want to advertise one price - find that price doesn't work for the cost of goods versus sales - then have someone come in saying the website said this but in-store said that.

I've seen threads kick businesses in the teeth for not having a website; now let's kick a new business in the teeth for HAVING a website with great descriptions of their product but no prices.

I mean no disrespect to anyone, but whatever happened to picking up the phone and giving the place a call? It takes all of one minute. With the overabundance of cell phones, can that really be that big of a problem in the grand scheme of things?

Well said.

And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

I'm not going to call a restaurant and ask them to list every menu item and their prices. I am also not going to avoid a place due to the lack of a website or lack of pricing on a website.

Based on what you have said, they could just as easily basically write a pricing "explanation" on the website. A "here's why we are not currently listing our prices" reasoning. Your argument makes perfect sense. The problem, if this is why the company is doing it, is that they are not making the reasoning transparent to the customer. When prices are not listed I just assume it's a "specialty" place and probably not in my price ballpark.

As for calling the place, the magic of the intrawebs (as designed by Al Gore) is that information can be transmitted between parties without a same-time conversation between the two parties. It's really an amazing advancement. It's not that I'm too lazy to call or don't have the time. It's that a business website should provide information to the customer for the use of the customer.

I wish the Comfy Cow only the best. I'm happy there's another local dessert place in town.

Rebecca,

I appreciate the pricing information you provided earlier. Yeah, the prices are not bad.

I'm not complaining about The Comfy Cow's website. I'm glad they already have a cute website up, and I'm willing to go check them out regardless. My complaint was totally limited to the lack of cocktail prices on restaurant menus.

I had my wisdom teeth taken out last week, so I haven't been eating much. Ice cream sounded good, so I requested we stop in. The Dulce De Leche is to DIE for. I mean, like, OHMYGOD good. For my large, and my husband's triple dip, it was close to $10. A bit pricier than Baskin-Robbins, but not bad considering everything is made from scratch, on site. The staff could not have been more friendly. I was very impressed. Can't wait to drag my 7 year old niece there soon, kicking and screaming all the way, I'm sure.

We drove alllll the way out to the Comfy Cow tonight, and as everyone has reported, that salted caramel ice cream is wonderful. Rub all over your body wonderful. Now, in fairness when Proof makes salted caramel I'd give it an edge, but you don't know if or when they're going to have it, and the Cow is more convenient and you can count on them having it all the time. So, the Cow wins.

DH also had apple pie. Meh.

Then we went next door to La Vida Java. Some of the best coffee and chai I have ever had. Seriously.

What a great dinner tonight! ice cream, pie and chai/coffee.

As the cow says, "Tomorrow we eat broccoli."

Also, just to pile on, the men who own the place were really patient about answering my stupid questions. And the coffee ice cream was exactly right...I might have liked it better than
my husband's caramel.

I went again last night to get my caramel ice cream fix and the place was packed. It was 8:30 and there were 28 people (I counted) people in the place. It was controlled chaos, but the service was with a smile and the ice cream was great.

Hello all,

Just wanted to pop in here and say thank you for all the compliments and support you've shown for The Comfy Cow. Tim and Roy really appreciate it.

Now that they've been open a couple of weeks I'm going to make some adjustments to the online menu to reflect flavor and product refinements, etc. and I'll be adding prices.

Thanks again for all your support.
