I do appreciate the service of our military men and women. They put form a supreme sacrifice, both risking their lives, and serving their country far from home - often a great distances from their families. I respect and admire them.

While I often disagree with the political leaders, the troops can always count on 100% support from me!

On a light note...When I went to enlist I originally wanted to be a Marine...but when the recruiter found out I'd already dated women they made me join the Navy. :? :D

I mirror the sentiment that politics should be left aside and the sacrifice each of these/you fine people make in service should be honored. Makes me wanna cook for them/you 'cause that's all I can do, from the heart.

And it pales in comparison, now doesn't it?

My dad was a Marine drill instructor at Parris Island in the early 60's (I was born there), then was shipped out to Viet Nam. He got out of the Marines in the late 70's, but didn't much care for civilian life, so in the 80's (when he was in his 40's) he tried to re-enlist, but the Marines wouldn't take him back because he was too old, so he enlisted in the Navy and retired from there.

One of my first memories of my dad was him stepping out of a taxi in front of our house in full dress uniform, coming home from Viet Nam.

Everyone has had one of those "I did WHAT ?" moments in life...Here's my friend Ron's.

Ron was 50 at the time and had spent almost 18 years as a air traffic controller in the Naval Reserve. It was pretty cushy duty with very little danger of ever going into harms way. Well in 1989 the FAA (his primary employer) transferred him to Oklahoma City and as a a result whenever duty called Ron was forced to drive 4 hours to Dallas, the location of the nearest Naval Reserve station. After a year of this he became weary of the every other weekend drive and with only a year before he was eligible to retire from the military he decided to finish out his reserve career with the local Army Reserve unit where of all things they made him a cook in a MASH unit.

Ron signed the papers transferring him from the Naval Reserve to the Army Reserve on July 18th 1990. 2 weeks later ol' Sad-Um invaded Kuwait...Guess where Ron spent the next 7 months ?
