Ron Taglieri wrote:I drank some bad ones in my time, particularly college days. In no particular order, here are some I found pretty bad, but consumed heavily due to young age and cheapness:

1. Old Style
2. Pabst Blue Ribbon
3. Bavarian something (can't remember)
4. Leinenkugel (brand had a mild resurgence, but seemed to be official drink of the homeless)
5. Milwaukee's Best
6. Lone Star
7. Schmidt's (although they had cool cans of outdoor life)

Please do not corrupt this thread with tales of quality beers as it will ruin the spirit of this email. Beers should be judged on poor taste, low prices, dive bars where they were only available, and ability to cause a quality hangover.

On a side note, where is a great dive bar to have some of these beers? Feels kinda Germantown-ish, but always fun to have nostalgic day of drinking with one of these beers.

Here's a few "quality" West Coast offerings

-Brown Derby
-Lucky Lager
-OLY
-Rainier
-Henry Wienhards "Private Reserve"

I think Lucky Lager is still $5 a case....yummy!!

I vaguely remember a long ago night of underage drinking which involved a horid brew called Lemon and Lager, which was on clearence sale for 99 cents a six pack at Liquor Outlet. It was, quite possibly, the foulest taste I have ever experienced.

as I am still in my 20's
(although it is officially late 20's as of today :( I turned 26)
I think I still am in the soft spot zone for some of these beers...I have to say, I think Lone Star is pretty great, and it has the bonus of never giving you (at least me) a hangover, no matter how much consumed! My band recorded our most recent record in Texas and tested my hypothesis...it was always correct for us! As a die hard Cubs fan, I can't take issue with Old Style, and it's pretty tasty on draft...and for whatever reason, I can't fault Strohs for anything other than a hangover from time to time.

however...being in a band and playing at lousy clubs around the country I will say the PBR for whatever reason is the "official free beer for bands of rock and roll"...and it's too bad...that stuff is terrible.

Schlitz is way lousy...as is Iron City/falls city

I decided in my early 20s that I just didn't like beer, period. I tried to like it, but I just couldn't. A few years ago it was brought to my attention that the Bud Light that had made up the entirety of my beer-drinking experience could not, in fact, be considered beer. I was introduced to some quality stuff and haven't looked back. Thus I've managed to avoid most of the really bad beer; I didn't drink it when I was young and didn't know better, and I'm sure as hell not going to drink it now! I will always hold a special disdain for Bud Light (and the people who encouarged me to drink it) because it delayed my appreciation of beer for several years.

I also have to give a shout-out to the Nachbar in Germantown. I am still in awe of the fact that something so amazing is only a block and a half from my house. Here is their beer list. You will note that among the many fine offerings there are also several $1.50 cans of traditionally bad beer for your enjoyment. :)

Ahhh, college!

Keystone
Keystone Light

I think these were/are made by the folks at Coors. The cans are supposed to be different than regular cans - they must be because I think this bottled poison would eat right through aluminum.

I had friend in college that loved Keystone. I could never stand it. I can honestly say I never tried more than one or two sips.

Me and my other more sophisicated beer drinkers stuck to Busch long necks! I went to college in Iowa, where they have a bottle / can deposit program. We'd save our bottles until we had a nice couch and love seat combo of cases. Once we filled out the ensemble with a nice coffee table we'd trade all the furniture in for the deposit money, get some full bottles and have a party.

It was a simpler time...

Cheers,

Doug.

Many have been said. Don't know how popular I am going to be but Kentucky horse piss is not so good. I think David bottles it but as I read the label that is all he does. The bottling is done well but the beer seriously lacks. I was expecting heavy flavor and it doesnt have much at all. I do appreciate the donations that derive from it though. It's not the worst I have had by any means, just one that has stuck out lately.

Well remembering the college days, I would have taken a Coors Light over Natty Light any day. I used to try so hard not to make a face as a drank it, but in college I guess beer is beer.

My all time favorite though has to be 'Dirt Cheap'. Really, the brand's name was Dirt Cheap. Just the fact that I was drinking beer with this name made it kind of fun.

Cheers!

Not sure if they still do it, but 6 to 8 years ago, Phoenix Hill had $1 draft Coors Light for their Friday happy hour. The free tacos were cold and the paper cups of "beer" were as warm as the summer afternoon. Really not sure why we went there.....

Old Milwaukee's Best Light This was the cheapest liquid for sale in the Piggly Wiggly in Memphis, literally. Holy cow it was bad, and you had to drink about twenty of them to catch a buzz.

It made Iron City, Schaefer, PBR, and all the rest seem highbrow.

Mine had to be Reinelander.... Wisconsin's Premium Export. We used to get 24 pack returnable bottles for $4.99 a case (plus deposit) It came in a green bottle that still did not block you from viewing the "stuff" floating around in it. The only way this was drinkable was to stick a bottle in the freezer for 10 minutes, then open and drink quickly.

Of course being in college at the time, we purchased many a case of this.... It was amazing to see the great care that we took care of each bottle. Considering the deposit on the case was $2.40, it was always ironic that the deposit cost half as much as the case cost.
