and of course Outside of the community ownership translates to all the profits going outside the community.

Hmmmmmmmm.....Valid point or not it kinda strikes me as rather poor taste to lay the mouth on a competitor. Just MHO mind you.

Steve, I really don't consider myself a competitor of the Liquor Barns. They have their customers and I have mine, and rarely do we share them. People tend to shop at where ever is closest to them, unless it is something very rare that they are looking for. I've posted several times on here how difficult it is to get people to cross one of the bridges to check us out. I have nothing but respect for what they do, and based on your tagline and glowing reports about the Barns you feel that way too. They have done a tremendous job growing that business to the size that it is, they are very charitable, and host good events. Everything that you look for in a good business.

BTW, how is it any different when I point out that their money is going out of the community, than when any restaurant owner makes the same point about another restaurant in the area?

Ok, I'm lost.

Liquor Barn IS better for buying local products and selling them throughout their stores; therefore giving back to the local economy. But, evil because they are owned by an outside interest taking all the profits out of the local economy?

Yep, that sounds like a good description of how everybody feels about them!

Not me! They have upset me by adding a location so close to my home, I can already see my bank account diminishing.

You all are talking about the Liquor Barn as it is today. The new group takes over in the next few months, so we'll see if they are still as community friendly as the current owners. My money says no!!!

I drove by that stretch of Shelbyville Road earlier this morning and couldn't help but notice a big Locally Owned neon sign in the window of a Beverage Warehouse...Let the price wars begin!

Perhaps I should explain myself better. While some may be concerned about most of the profits going outside of the community, my beef is with businesses that feel like they can operate apart from or without any responsibility to the community. And there's plenty of LOCAL businesses that do that. Conversely, there are chain businesses that recognize themselves as part of the city they're in and give back to it as opposed to just sucking the resources (money) out of the neighborhood and leaving a mess and bad feelings in their wake. I have no idea how Liquor Barn will be in that regard.

My previous comment was related to business practices and not monetary traffic.

I guess most of this is conjecture unless one is to look at an end of year fiscal calendar matching Locally Owned / Operated Store "John's Liquor" vs Canadian Business Stores " Sally's Liquor " located nationally.

Right? I think?? I mean, I really don't know.

Kyle, etc.

I love local but sometimes I think this local "thing" can be taken a bit too far. Ignoring The Barn for a minute and using restaurants as an example, it goes without saying that we have some fine-fine local establishments here in L'ville, most of them worthy of every dollar they earn. But anyone who thinks the investment/investors in each and every one of these establishments comes from 100% local sources has probably been hitting the ol' bong a bit too hard. My point is (as a far fetched example perhaps) would anyone stop frequenting any of Chef Deanos establishments if they discovered 1/2 his investors (and thus half his profits) came from and went to somewhere other than the local community ?

Whoa, I didn't remember that. I actually do prefer the smaller locals like Old Town, Gemelli, Wine Rack, St. Matthews Wine Co., etc., anyway. Still, it sort of makes sense to have the Chain Liquor Barn so near the Chain Whole Foods ...

Ahhhhhh, I'm thinking going to fall of on the side of "I don't give a diddly dad-burned where the profits go or how many stores the place has" on this one.

Ditto. I support the Law of Comparative Advantage. Let the Canadians do what they are good at and we will do locally what we are good at. Everyone wins.

http://www.courierjournal.com/article/2 ... rn+traffic

Beverage Warehouse, across Shelbyville from Liquor Barn, says Liquor Barn is too close to Beverage Warehouse to comply with St. Matthews' law requiring stores to be at least 700 feet apart.

Beverage Warehouse had filed suit to try to prevent a liquor license from being issued to Liquor Barn and to have a hearing on the matter by the state Alcoholic Beverage Control board while the board was considering whether to issue the license.

Ouch, that could be an expensive mistake. Hopefully it will get worked out.

Edit: I read some of the back stories on "that" site and it looks like the license was approved, and Beverage Warehouse's initial suit was tossed out. It seems odd that if a business is right across the street that it would be within the 700 feet limit, but they said they use a safe walking distance, which entails using the lights and crosswalks. I don't know about you, but I don't know of anywhere or any time that you could safely cross Shelbyville Road and its 8 lanes of traffic.
