DEEP, DEEP, DEEPEST DIVING

by Jim Greenbrier » Tue Oct 20, 2009 11:19 am

.....for a real deep drive in and dive visit the DIZZY WHIZ which beats all those shallow dives mentioned before by many fathoms.
.
Since about 1947 , yum-like Whiz Burgers have fed Louisvillians since slightly after WWII. The 'DELISH' chili is a True-Louisville dark brown much before the advent and invasion of tomatoes and light, pale looking concotions.

At 3rd and St Catherine, across from the Gothic Towers of the Walnut Street Baptist Church, gratis entertainment is watching the towers for the Demon Leaper who reportedly half man half bat.

Lotza local color and the prices are a true treasure that a accomplished diver expects at such depths.. bubble, bubble...

Try the huge Sweet Daddy platter (hamburger & fries) with frickled pickles. Pretty remarkable.

I confess to watching very little television. Wasn't Guy Fieri the TGI Friday's corporate shill? If so, best send him into the heart of Cordish.

I wouldn't knock the guy for making a buck off TGI fridays. I'm sure the good his show has done local buisnesses across the country makes up for any amount of selling out to the man.

With that said, i don't think louisville has many restaurants that fit the "DDD" profile, strictly speaking. We don't have any diners or drive ins, and some of the dive's mentioned, IMHO, aren't quite up to par with the ones on the show. However, if you watch the show a lot, its really become "locally owned restaurants serving 4 star 'home cooked' food". Those we have a lot of. He usually visits an ethnic restaurant too, so for example Havana Rumba might fit the bill.

I think you guys are concentrating too much on the "dive' part. The last show i watched he was at some sandwich shop in downton boston that serves like 6000 sandwiches a day...not exactly a dive. They just made awesome food.

Hey Guys. I was afraid to enter the conversation at the risk of sounding like I was flaming local places, but I also agree, the Diners...etc. are looking less for dives, and more for unusual places that serve one or more outstanding dishes. Very few of the afore mentioned places do this. Good all around food, but not the quite the quality the show is looking for. Keep the ideas coming. I would love to see Guy come to Louisville and do a couple of places. Please no Lynns... the disney world of local places... anything but them. They have accolades in spades, and some deserving, though I've been a little bummed by the food last few times I went. I also hate waiting so long to be seated in a tourist tiny town. Peace. Perhaps an even better question would be is "What's our Best Truck Stop?"...

I am sticking with my trifecta. All locally owned and operated. Very unique and different in their own ways and serving up far better than average food. A vegan cheese steak @the swan dive, the monkey burger @ the monkey wrench of course and anything to do with breakfast late night @ Juanitas.

Probably not, but a great place. Great food and fairly cheap. At the 13th and Broadway location, the line is out the door at lunch time. Forget the drugstore if you have stopped up sinuses. A couple pieces of chicken and an order of wedges will take care of it for you.

Everyone should just watch the show a couple of times and then make your list. Its on all the time on Food Network. Its really one of the best food shows on television. Whether you like Guy or not, its not like he's promoting anything, he's just showing off food around the country.

BTW heres a list of everywhere he's been. There's probably 200 restaurants on there and not one from Kentucky. Thats a shame...we need to get on someone! http://www.foodnetwork.com/shows/guys-d ... index.html

Allyn's Cafe, http://www.allynscafe.net/ ,in Cincinasty. They have a good Tower of Power-like blues band called the Bluebirds on Sundays. Didn't eat there but they do Cajun. I was there last Sunday and a fight broke out. I think that qualifies it as a good dive.
