I'm in no way calling you a liar, Jessie: I'd like to commend you. I have never seen a server do a dish or mop a floor (sweeping, yes. Not mopping) in my entire life. Kudos to you and your crew!

This is not a server slam - it's just that those things are not normally part of their duties, not expected and definitely almost never performed. That would be like saying "we cooks take wine deliveries, wash the front windows, water the plants and roll silverware."

Marsha, My servers sweep and mop the dining room floor nightly. My kitchen person sweeps and mops the kitchen floor. The servers also do all the washing up for the dining room by hand. The kitchen person does the cooking equipment. In this economy, I have had to cut staff, so now I only have one server lunchtimes Mon to Thus, and one server nightly Mon - Weds. One person other than me in the kitchen, and my outoings are still equal to my incomings. Actually, if you take into account all that I owe Indiana Dept of Revenue, and Federal my outgoings surpass my incomings. It is a tough time to be in the restaurant trade that is for sure.

Robin, when are you going to get over here?????

A good server will often take a great deal of abuse and always smile. They SERVE. Some people take advantage of that giving disposition and act like entitled butts; as if being difficult to please solidifies some sort of social standing for them. A manager puts in a great deal of time (and overtime) in a restaurant but, unlike a server, doesn't have to deal with the lack of respect that a waiter or waitress often encounters. Customers can be down right demeaning sometimes simply because they can and a sever is left with little recourse other than endure it. And no, I'm not a server, but we've all either seen the sort I'm talking about in restaurants or have been embarrassed by dining with folks that act that way. Why don't Americans have more respect for this profession the way Europeans do?

Why don't Americans split the bill the way the Europeans do instead of having to have three different tickets for three couples!!!

I believe it has a larger part to do with American temperament towards anything in Society than specifically servers on that particular night. As a "culture", Americans have become littered with instant gratification. While the same may be said for Germany or France, I find it difficult to believe people in the United States have not also fallen into a landlocked culture. This, in my opinion, is the main reason people in the United States find it difficult to relate; simply because they only have to put up with their own society.

They do it in Europe too.

They do it in Europe too.

I am English, and when I was living in England as a single woman, I can honestly say that at a restaurant, we would split the bill equally. I spent 9 years in Crete, and I can categorically say that the bill is split by however many couples or families are there. No way, does each couple or family have a separate ticket.

My mother is German and I still have many relatives in various parts of said country. As a boy, I lived there for one Summer and was last back to visit in 2000. So I can say without a doubt while visiting France and Germany , we had a separate ticket during a meal. Whether or not they make it a habit of doing this or it was an exception; I'm stating it does happen. And, did.

People are posting to that site "THIS IS FALSE" with the accompanying proof via links, yet the site stays up, gathering new members who obviously won't let facts keep them from joining the cause.

I've been trying to convince the people for 3 days they were listening to a lie, then gave up. They were just not listening; some were convinced they read it on a website or she had said it, but there's not link or proof. They just took off and ran with this one; so I gave up.
