You'd think!

Here's another trivia bit: You really know your way around Louisville if you can pronounce the name of the street *behind* where the old Sears used to be, where you'll find Havana Rumba and Del Frisco's.

It's spelled "Oechsli." Surely everyone here knows how to pronounce it. :)

Ironically a buddy of mine gave me directions to a hardware store last week using only liquor stores and bars as landmarks

I was in a conversation just last week talking about the monkey riding the bike on top of the old Thornbury's toy store next to the old Sears building :)

Veranese is where the Red Lounge used to be.

And it's "Plains" Bakery, not "Plens" Though I grew up calling it "Plens"

I just gave someone directions tonight based upon the Old Sears Building. She's from Cleveland, but she's been here awhile!

Nope. Ed was right. It's "Exley." Not talking proper German-Swiss here, but local usage.

OK , so where on Lexington Rd was the old old Sears store located that closed when the big cube building opened in 1959?

Based on Google Maps, next to or across the street from the old Vogue Theater. Sorry, couldn't resist.

I once worked in the East End with someone with this last name. She pronounced it: Oh Shlee.

Chances are that people with this family name pronounce it somewhat closer to the Old Country version than do passers-by looking at an unpronounceable street sign in St. Matthews, Bob.

A Friend of mine in college was from Mt. Sterling, Ky. He lived in Winchester and commuted on a daily basis to campus. I,myself, lived in the dorms rooms. For anyone that's ever been to Mt. Sterling or Winchester; you know they have their KY accents. It took me a few months when he and I first met to understand Winchesterees. A little bit longer to get the ear for Mt. Sterling lingo.

One semester,Joe (yes, that was his his name) , and I were comparing class schedules. As I looked down his schedule, one struck me as rather odd. In fact, downright strange. Joe was going to take Russian. I said "Joe. You're taking Russian for your foreign language class? " He replied, "Yea, figured it was something that be neat."

I looked at him straight in the eye and said "Joe. I can barely understand you in English."

--> I'd liked to hear his pronunciation of Oechsli Ave. :)
