I was referring to the diners doing that division themselves, not the server.
I have NEVER asked for separate checks in a restaurant. It is so tacky.

Why would you divide the total? If I have a 8 dollar salad and the yahoo next to me has 26 dollar whatever, you best believe that I am not going to pay more than what I ordered. There will be no "divide the check by number of diners" if I am there. On top of that, what if everyone is paying with a card? I never carry cash. Also, I don't think most people make enough money to drop other peoples tab on their card and possibly expect payment later. I for one don't want to "owe" people anything. I think separate checks are a necessity and not a difficult task for the server.
