I don't think it was quite 10 years ago. Mmm ... okay, make that six years ago. I reviewed it in January 2003, when it had been open for only a month or two, and I don't think it lasted a year. Here's my old review, still in the archives:

OK, you guys convinced me to try Bosna-Mak. It's within walking distance of my apartment so I'm gonna walk over and get a gyro. Any other recommendations on their menu?

Definately if you are that close. The Macedonian salad is good. It has no lettuce but is like chopped veggies, onions, cucumber, etc. I've had the mashed potatoes and they were good also. But the gyro, is a meal in itself.

I'm looking at their menu and I see the gyro plate, any idea what that consists of?

LOL... well the meni online has no description and small pictures, looks like gyro meat, rice, and maybe a pita on the side, but there's some other items I can't make out.

I prefer the standard gyro over the plate because of the good bread that the fixins is stuffed into.

I normally just get the gyros itself. If memory serves me correct the "plate" is basically just a deconstructed gyros with the addition of a portion of rice mixed with veggies. One other thing to try there would be the Cevapi, a sausage found all over eastern europe in many variations. Oh yeah, dont forget to get a piece of baklava.

and if you go...dont forget the eating area is in back corner of the international store. I have sent a couple folks there in the past that didnt walk far enough in to find the tables. If your there at lunch time its likely there will be Mexican soap operas on the tv that have Bosnian subtitles with commercials playing from all over Eastern Europe.

Finally went to Bosna-Mak. Had the gyro and really liked it. Al Watan's gyro is made of lamb which I prefer and it seems to be more heavily spiced than Bosna-Mak's beef version, but Bosna-Mak's sauce is a bit better than AW and the bread is unique and much different than a standard pita. All in all I wouldn't put Bosna'Mak's gyro above Al Watan's, but it's definitely number 2 in town. It is a hell of a lot of food for 4.99 and there are others items I'd like to try, I'll definitely be back.

I'm not a big gyro eater so my sample size is small, but I'm always up for a gyro from Zaytun's. The meat is from Kingsley's (unless Remy has made a change) and the bread is amazing. Although I have no idea how to describe it. Guess I'll have to pay more attention next time I have one. Which should be soon. very soon.

Thanks for that link to the history of gyros, Jeremy. I found the story fascinating. Now I understand my love for gyros, considering I grew up within five miles of one of the plants that produce that meat product.

I have to say that looking at the picture of the gyro on that page makes my mouth water, with that crispy meat.

I have never had a gyro, but that was a very interesting article. A bit sad at the end for me though.....
