Oh yeah, I was lucky enough to go to college in New York in the '60's for my last two years of college, after two years at a "protestant convent for young women" in Missouri. (And yes, we did find away to have a drink or two on date nights. Read Friday or Saturday evening when we could be off campus until ten on Friday and eleven on Saturday. Of course, that meant chewing raw potatoes and coffee grounds to cover up unspeakable odors, before walking past the house mother who had a nose of great size and discrimination.)

Gayle, what a great story. I'd love to see a picture of you from that time period - do you have one?

I'll do some looking, Marsha. It will take a while, however.

That the only way to do it...i.e. smoke your own meat!

John Wettig is Antz's brother and I think he's partnering with him on this (I've been wrong before, but I think this is the case), and for those of you that go to the Beer Depot on Frankfort Ave, they both have tended bar there for longer than I can recall. I always see John there, but I've only noticed Antz a couple of times over the years. They're really really great guys and I have zero doubt that this will be a tremendously hot place.

My mom used to work there in the late 60s early 70s.
I think my dad asked her to marry him there or maybe my brother asked my dad to be his dad?
I forgot. The place is looking good though. Great location. I want to buy it when I get rich.

Speaking from personal eexperience and direct knowledge:

1. Robin is right that Zanzibar was spelled with an "i." (remember the rotating disco ball?)
2. Robin is right that the KY age for drinking has always been 21, at least sine the 50s.
3. Robin is right that anybody in Z-Bar was assumed to be 21, since Z-Bar was were known to never card anyone who could walk through the door and pay for a drink. (Had it not been for the Z-Bar, Pine Room, Bauer's and some carry-out liquor store on Frankfort Avenue that I can't remember the name of, I might remember something from my high school years.)

4. Robin is always right.

If I remember right Reagan was going to withhold state tax money on highway projects and repairs if states did not pass this law.

I spent a year in Ohio when I was 19 when the near beer thing was going on :D

Sadly, this one is demonstrably false. Thanks, though, Jeffrey!

Sadly, that is correct. The matter was further pushed along by the fact that some states had already capitulated to MADD before Reagan did this, while others staunchly upheld the age of 18. This created a problem because 18 year-olds were driving across state lines, getting hammered, and then driving back. If MADD had kept their collective nose out of it, then I'm sure a lot of deaths created by that untenable situation could have been prevented.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that most people are more competent drinkers than voters at the age of 18. Now that I've said that, I'm not sure age does much to close the gap.

Back on the craft beer kick, has anyone heard anything about getting NABC, or other local beer on tap?

Also, when you said "corporate beer," did you mean non-local or true macro-brewing? Surely they must have Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. (Even the Bambi Bar has that!)

That's where I'm from!!! I might've asked you this before, but are you from there? Where in Vienna? We were just there at the end of last week for a family reunion. My mom still lives there, and I visit her quite a bit. Sorry, I just get excited by hometown connections

Yes he is from P-burg, graduated from Parkersburg HS (way too many years ago!). Lived on 28th St in Vienna, his brother's MIL owns the house now. We were there the 26, 27, 28 for a reunion in Harrisville. His last name is Meadows BTW.

Not just Reagan. Bush 1, Clinton, Bush 2 and Obama have continued and expanded the practice.
