We picked four different appetizers. The BF knew what he wanted, but I couldn't decide. I asked the server just to pick something for me (anything but fish). He picked lamb masala. I was extremely happy with the meal and the service. We felt like we were the only table, but in reality the place was really busy.

I have tried a few of the Indian places here in town and still time after time, Shalimar's always comes in at #1 for me. I have been really dissapointed with the other Indian restaurants, so dissapointed that I tend to not want to try the new Indian restaurants that pop up a lot. Shamilar's has a great lunch buffet, the food is always hot and fresh and plenty of things to try!

So is Dakshin owned by the same people who own Bombay (at Bonnycastle/Bardstown) and the liquor store next door and Cafe 360 (across the street, at Bonnycastle) and the Middle Eastern / Indian grocery also in the Eastland plaza? I saw a DakShin truck on Bonnycastle today and it all started to click.

Just curious....

Yes, it is! Well, according to Sanjay, the guy that seems to be the owner of Bombay. He's also started a wholesale exotic produce company, he told me the other day. Not selling to restaurants, though - just to groceries.

Forum participants always fail to mention India Palace whenever the topic of Indian restaurants is discussed. I find it to be along the lines of Shalamar--mostly non-Indian clientele (although quite diverse), more Indian-American "standards" type of food. That might not be as avant-gardist in Indian food terms, but I remind you that they have been in business for nearly 11 years and I believe that makes them the longest running Indian restaurant in the Ville. So hats off to the Indian Palace folk who have a viable business model and have been serving us clean, fresh food for over a decade.

Marsha already answered this, but yes. I spend a lot of time in Bombay/Hometown Liquors (they know me by name. . .), and both Sanjay and the other guy (forgetting his name) have talked to me about DakShin.

They're so nice to me, I almost feel guilty that I haven't been yet. . .

I don't know why Kashmir hasn't been mentioned with more zeal. I think Kashmir is easily the best Indian in town. Other buffets may be better but the items off the menu are superb. I guess Kashmir suffers from being older. The new kids on the block tend to garner more attention. It wasn't too long ago that Kashmir was everyone's darling and everyone's favorite "ethnic" restaurant. My how times have changed. If I had my druthers, there is no better place to have Indian food than Kashmir on a nice spring day on their patio.

Just my two cents: Shalimar has been in establishment for at least twenty years.

No new kid syndrome there!

Definitely an oldie along with India Palace. It's those restaurants that first introduced me to Indian food in Louisville. I am pretty much equidistant from Shalimar and Kashmir. Shalimar's buffet is much better but I usually choose Kashmir because of the patio and the menu items.

The hubby and I go to DakShin whenever we crave Indian food. Love the place. Can't say enough about it! The buffet is fantastic, and service is always great. I could eat my weight in the garlic naan. So good! Now I want Indian Food!

I tend to agree. I find the food at Kashmir and Shalimar (my two current favorites) to be on the same level, which is a high level, in my opinion. Kashmir wins for me because of location and the patio, so it would be my favorite.

Based on what I've heard about Dakshin, it sounds like it would likely work its way into my top 3 somewhere, but for now, my heart is with Kashmir.

That was India Palace, which has been mentioned often in this thread, before it moved out to Shelbyville Road near Hurstbourne. Sadly, that short stretch of Bardstown, which was once a pretty decent neighborhood, has become fairly grim. (After India Palace left, Queen of Sheba also passed through there before moving on to Taylorsville Road. I don't know if any eatery is in there right now.)

(i think) if i remember correctly the outside of the building had an indian motif. back then it was like the only place in town, not very clean as i remember. so anyone know what place i talking about and are they still around? thanks

Annemarie,
Years ago, we had a tasty but hysterical meal at the original India Palace location in the Admiral Benbow Inn on Bardstown Rd., as it was labelled at the time. I had spent a summer living in London and became an Indian cuisine fiend, so when it opened we had to go. As I recall, the hotel part was closed and they had set up shop in a portion of the lobby. It was winter and a very chilly night. When we were seated, they brought 4 space heaters out and surrounded our table, with extension cords trailing out of sight down the hall. And they proceeded to do that with every table that came in. 12 space heaters later, we couldn't quit giggling but were a little concerned for our safety. I'm sure the fire marshall would have had a coronary.

Oh, and since I'm here, for what its worth, I've always enjoyed Kashimir and really, really like Bombay Grill. I haven't made it to Dakshin but have always heard the best about it. Its just a little too far off my beaten path at the moment.

You may not believe this...but we must have been there the same night. We took my mother-in-law to introduce her to Indian food. We had spent part of the previous summer in London and fell in love with Indian cuisine. I don't think she ever really got over the space-heaters. We kept our jackets on I think. This was 16 or 17 years ago at least. On another occasion at that spot we were eating during a storm and the roof started to leak. In those days there we no other options...none.

Personally I think Bombay Grill has the best Indian food in town. I grew up in India and every time I order dosas and sambhar and curry at Bombay Grill it brings back some really old and fond memories. I have tried almost all of their menu items and so far I have not been disappointed. I usually prefer the a la carte menu just because you can modify the dishes the way you like it.

I visited Dakshin about a month ago and although they seem to have a wide variety of different dishes from different parts of India, the food did not seem very authentic. The portion size, the flavor and the quality I thought were a little sub par. I have heard great things about Dakshin on this forum and I am going to give Dakshin another try. Its possible that it could have been one of their off nights but until then Bombay Grill still gets high marks from me!
