Yeah, after I posted I noticed that.

Every time we come home from a trip on I75 we take the 150 exit and eat at the Kentucky Depot. I have never been disappointed there.

Perhaps, I'm misunderstanding the question. I initially though you only asked favorite places outside of Louisville, but you're more inclined to want ones on back roads?

Not really, I just love the idea of a nice country drive no matter if it takes me to LEX or a small town outside Lebanon.

Great suggestions and ideas so far. I'll need to put them all on my bucket list, especially considering I'm about to turn the big 3-0!

I forgot about Boone Tavern. Like you it has been awhile since I ate there.

Operating on the assumption that Oldham and Shelby are part of the Louisville Metropolitan area for census purposes, I'd consider Westport General Store, Sergio's, Science Hill and others to be more local/regional than "outside."

How about Holly Hill Inn in Midway, though? That's a Louisville-quality restaurant in the boonies.

Holly Hill Inn would be my #1 choice with excellent food, beautiful setting, scenic drive and wonderful ( independent) owners.

Boone Tavern Hotel - Berea (used to be good but it's been years)

I forgot about Boone Tavern. Like you it has been awhile since I ate there.

Last time we ate there we felt it was not as good as it used to be. Seems like a lot of the local industries connected to Berea College have gone downhill and closed recently. Who would have ever thought that Churchill Weavers would have closed?

Gotta throw in a suggestion from my hometown here-Jewell's in Warsaw, Kentucky. There's not much else around there, but it's a nice place to visit on the way to the Belterra Casino.

That menu is making me hungry, and ultra reasonable.

I second that on all counts. The food is wonderful and the atmosphere is refined, but unpretentious. Holly Hill is a memorable experience!
