Seconding Sub Station II on Fern Valley, my mom took me there often when I I was a little girl and I still love to go there. I don't often care for chains but Jimmy John's actually is pretty decent.

I'll also vote for Stevens & Stevens as the most like a real NY deli in the area. As exiles from the NY/NJ area, they're the first place my wife and I have found that even comes close to "the real thing." (We were spoiled by Koch's Deli in Philadelphia, but I digress.)

But if you're looking for a sub like you'd get in Jersey, it's really hard to beat Jersey Mike's. I know it's a chain, but it's pretty consistent from store to store, and again, it's as close to being in a deli in Jersey as we can get.

In case you haven't been able to tell, Stevens and Stevens is the bomb. My nephew in San Francisco says it exceeds any deli in the Bay area! Also, Crave on Frankfort avenue makes excellent sandwiches and they're the closest thing to Soup NaziImage quality soups!

For those downtown, two places come to mind

1. Main Street Eatery (7th and Main) - quality products at a friendly price - especially if you opt for a combo with soup/salad. Their chicken salad and blt are two of my favorites.

2. Another Sandwich Shop (or something like that on 7th b/w main and market) - only open for lunch and I just get their sub special for $4 - really like the sub rolls they use.

I will suggest the Corner Cafe for their Nuclear Sub and Lotsa Pasta's Italian sub from the meat counter.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

Also, if you're a fan of muffulettas, Lotsa Pasta's version is as close as it gets to the New Orleans original. (I like Cafe Lou Lou's, too, but LP's strikes me as paying closer homage to the Central Grocery model.)

Robin, I love the muff at Lotsa but I dont think its really that close to a "real" muff. One of the biggest issues is the bread. As I recall its traditionally served on a round bread cut into quarters. Also, it always seems a bit shy on the meat for a "real" muff. Dont get me wrong, I am not complaining I really do enjoy their version. Most often one of us will get the sub and the other the muff and end up sharing with each other.

I will second Stevens & Stevens, also suggest Frank's on Preston for huuuuge sandwiches. Also, you MUST try the Cuban sandwich from the Valu Market Deli.

Frank's on Preston is great. Super friendly as well.

Thornberry's Deli on S. 3rd St. also makes a great (and cheap) sandwich!

I'll also put in a plug for Stevens and Stevens. Also- Crave on Frankfort Avenue has good sandwiches, too. They also have a wicked blue cheese cole slaw- but they tend to run out quickly!

Shoot beat me to it, I actually jumped back on here to say something for Crave Cafe. I give a resounding yes to the blue cheese cole slaw, I have NEVER liked cole slaw but I am beyond addicted to that stuff. I have made trips there just to get it. They also have combos of pick 2 from half sandwich/soup/salad. Their soups are pretty tasty, I love their tomato artichoke. The only bad thing about it is that they are only open until 4pm. I also agree that the Cubano at Valu Market is great, I called ahead to order one last weekend while out on errands.

Its not a deli but- my fav sandwich in the entire city is at Toast. The ham, salami, and caper sandwich on olive bread is to die for!
