Clearly BBQ is a personal and subjective food type. I can't choke down Mark's Feed Store; mainly from a style point of view. On the other hand I like Jucy's quite a bit - especially their beef brisket.

Comparing Pig City to Jucy's is . . . well . . . comparing pigs to cows.

Pig City is a pig based BBQ as found in many places in the Southeast, but perfected east of I-85 in North Carolina (B's BBQ in Greenville being the holy grail of Eastern NC BBQ). There may be a number of menu items, but it is the chopped (or sliced) pork that is the main attraction.

Jucy's is better at what it does than Pig City is at what it does, but Jucy's is a Texas-style beef leaning BBQ specializing in brisket and ribs.

They're both BBQ in the broadest sense, but in my neck of the woods, it would be like saying you you were out for Asian and were disappointed in Pad Thai at Thai Taste so went for the Lo Mein at Jade Palace.

Pig City = OK meat, bad sides, bad service. Why bother?

I have never had a side there that I liked. I hated their potato salad, their mixed veggies were hard and their coleslaw was inedible. Personally, my husband and I LOVE Mark's Feed Store and we even pay less there than we did at Pig City.

That's interesting. I actually I tried Mark's for the first time a few weeks ago (crazy, I know. I couldn't believe I hadn't eaten there before) and was VERY dissapointed. Now I always enjoy myself at Pig City!???

I loves me some of Mark's Feed Store's sides!

What about Shack in the Back in Fairdale? Has anyone tried this place?

We've never been to Pig City, but I heard they're light on smoke, and we really like to taste the smoke. Love Jucy's, especially the brisket. But our current favorite for ribs is Frankfort Avenue Beer Depot (FABD). We got ribs there last night (baby back), and they were delicious!!! Juicy, tender, with a really nice bark. They're served dry with sauce on the side, which is what I prefer. Love their baked beans as well. I heard (on this board, I'm sure) that it's the same guy who ran Pepperwood, and I always loved their ribs, and am so happy to be able to get them again!!

Becky, I can't speak for private individuals or church lunches, but I think when you go to most of the city's better barbecue eateries, you won't get that kind of an excuse for chicken barbecue! :)

Sometimes I get baffled at how polarizing some of you are in your responses. BBQ is something that is purely subjective to those that are eating. At the very, very best there might be 1% of us on this forum that could have any kind of formal ability to allow us to REALLY critique BBQ. most of us would praise those that we like, and criticize those that we don't. Sometimes, people take the liberty of being in an open forum too far. Most on here don't have the credentials to downgrade someone's culinary hard work.

According to you we have to have CREDENTIALS to say what we like and don't like. That is rather weird. Of course that means that you have the proper credentials to say what is good and what is not. Lacking credentials (whatever that means) means that 99% of us should shut up.

The best BBQ I ever had was from a rolling smoker that visited many gas station parking lots about 10 years ago. I had a pulled brisket sandwich at the Shell Station on Brownsboro Rd. (The one not far from Zorn). It was perfection and I've never had BBQ again that was that good. Pepperwood (are they even around anymore anywhere?) had some great BBQ but again, that's been a while back.
