This is good news. The fish with chipotle sauce is absolutely amazing, and the owner Roberto is a really good man. I hope they are able to thrive back at the Goose Creek location. I know that I will be able to make it in more often based on the proximity to my house.

Upon hearing that Perla del Pacifico was back at Goose Creek I couldn't help but stop by tonight for dinner. In line with what Chris said, the salsa is distinctively fresh compared to what you will find at some of the other places around town. This is likely due to the fact that, not surprisingly, it is made fresh everyday using no canned products. There are several other "Mexican" establishments around town that use canned tomatoes to crank out massive batches of "salsa". The salsa also contains the perfect amount of fresh cilantro, which makes it taste better, more fresh, and more authentic. This ingredient is conspicuously absent from many of the aforementioned places around town. Also, as Chris mentioned it does have quite a kick and only comes in one variety, so be sure to order a glass of water.

After filling up on chips and salsa I had what I thought was little room for my meal, the fish "Al Chipotle" as mentioned in my previous post. I wanted to get daring and try something new, but I hadn't dined there since they were last in this location so I went with my favorite. I received a white fish, likely tilapia, smothered in a smokey chipotle sauce and topped with a small amount of shredded jack. The fish was cooked to perfection and the sauce was naturally a bit spicy, with more emphasis on flavor than heat. It was actually less spicy than the aforementioned salsa. The waitress said the filet "Al Ranchero" was the most spicy, but I didn't have the nerve to give it a try. My wife enquired, but when she said it was served with a red tomatillo sauce I knew right away that it wasn't in the cards for me.

My wife, whose favorite is also the "Al Chipotle", went with something new; the filet Al Mojo do Ajo. She received a white fish, again which I assume to be tilapia, cooked to perfection with minced garlic and a light butter sauce. I know it is hard to imagine a "light" butter sauce, but somehow they have managed to do it. Not only is the sauce light, the minced garlic doesn't overpower the flavor of the fish. The fish simply melted in my mouth and I am determined to order this on my next visit. Both dishes were served with a rice vegetable mixture and a salad with avocado, lettuce, tomato, and an orange slice.

I was also told they got their alcohol license just last Saturday, so now you can get your favorite cerveza. My wife and I each had a Sidral, which is an apple flavored soda that is a Mexican favorite. Imagine carbonated apple juice (along with the water I mentioned before).

Overall our bill came to just over 24 bucks for both entrees and the sodas. Seven dollar tip and we were out the door with an absolutely marvelous meal for just over 30 bucks (no alcohol as mentioned before). They also have not been able to fix the credit card issue, but I was assured it would be done soon. It is also worth noting that on this night around 7PM, we were the only diners and no one else came the entire time we were there. The waitress said business has been light since the re-opening two weeks ago. I strongly encourage the foodies lurking around this forum to get out and give it shot.

I was in there signing them for the show and Roberto offered me lunch -
I chose a Seviche appetizer - something quick since I had some photos to take in Oldham
County, and because I loooove seviche. Wow - so good! :D

Piled high on a tostada with a basket of fresh tostadas to eat the Seviche. Perfect lite lunch - filled me
up!! I ask what they charge for it and he said $3.50, or $4.50 for the camerones (shrimp seviche).
Wow again...!

I was back at La Perla last night and wanted to post my impressions. First, the salsa was just as good as last time, though it wasn't quite as spicy. Roberto was there last night and when I arrived he had a nice sized lobster tail which had been split and topped with a smoky sweet red sauce (Diablo style I believe). It was a decent sized tail for the 25.00 asking price, and I was quite tempted to go that route. Roberto, however, also mentioned that he was testing a new soup, Caldo de Patron. My wife asked if she could have a small sample, but he said they make the soup to order and there was none prepared. We decided to go out on a limb and try it (15.00 for a portion which is literally enough for a meal for 2-3) so I opted against the lobster as I was still planning to order an entrée to go with the soup.

It took them about 30 minutes to prepare, and boy was it worth the wait. The soup was delivered piping hot with lime, onion, jalapeño, and fresh cilantro on the side. The broth reminded of a Mexican posole. It had a tomato chipotle base which contained just enough chipotle to remove the sweetness from the tomato, yet it was not extremely spicy. Roberto also told us that he put a splash of Patron in, but the flavor was distinctly apparent. The soup contained generous portions of shrimp, white fish filet, potato, and carrot. We added the onion, lime, and a good bit of fresh cilantro opting out of the jalapeno. Fabulous is a good way to describe the ultimate result.

For the entrée my wife ordered the filet al mojo de ajo again (see my description above), and I opted for the jaibos (crabs) mojo de ajo style. I got 4 to 5 crabs, main shell removed, that were likely boiled, split, and then sautéed in a sauce of butter and minced garlic. The result was the breast and claw meat had a nice buttery garlic flavor, but the meat itself was not drenched in butter masking or diluting its wonderful natural flavor. Since the crabs are sautéed in the butter sauce I made quite a mess of myself handling them. As a crab lover I found this dish wonderful, yet not extremely filling. I had ordered this with the soup in mind, but had I just ordered it by itself I would have still been a bit hungry. It was only 11.00 which is not bad for 4 to 5 crab anywhere.

We washed all of this down with water and apple soda, and this time we ordered the churros rellenos for desert. These were similar to what you may find at many Mexican restaurants. This variation was a pastry filled with vanilla custard (raspberry was also a temporary option), fried, and topped with cinnamon and sugar. They were arranged around a large dollop of cream. Much like the rest of the meal I found them particularly appetizing. All of this came to 42 bucks, which is not bad considering the 15.00 soup. We had two decent sized portions left, one of which I am getting ready to eat for lunch right now. Service was great and much like last time we were the only ones in the restaurant on this Thursday evening between 6 and 8.

We ate there today for the first time with Dining with Steve certificate....It was excellent and the service was superb. We had the shrimp tacos and fish seviche. We will definitely repeat there often. By the way does anyone know what the drink in a tall handled glass was...it was red and had a slice of lime on edge.

We ate there for the second time today and it was again delicious and excellent service. I am curious as to what some of their drinks are...I recognize one that I assume is Mexican beer with tomato juice...but I also saw several others getting some drink in tall glasses with salt around the edge. I think they only have a beer licenese so I assume they are either a beer drink or a juice drink. I wouldn't mind trying some of them but I don't know what they are and they do not list any of their drinks on the menu. Thanks.

Sallie,

You recognized a Cerveza Preparada (Prepared beer). Perhaps the one they were drinking was a Chavela. Often times the rim of it is coated with chili powder and salt. Made in a variety of ways: (Wiki explanation)

It is made with tomato, V8, or Clamato juice mixed with beer, and seasoned with Hot Sauce (i.e., Tabasco, Tapatio, Bufalo, etc.). It is served in an ice-cold salt-rimmed mug and garnished with crudités (carrot and celery sticks) and/or shrimp.

They are pretty good , but I'm weird.

Or it could have been a Clamato Beer. In that case, I feel sorry for them.
