I was back at La Perla last night and wanted to post my impressions. First, the salsa was just as good as last time, though it wasn't quite as spicy. Roberto was there last night and when I arrived he had a nice sized lobster tail which had been split and topped with a smoky sweet red sauce (Diablo style I believe). It was a decent sized tail for the 25.00 asking price, and I was quite tempted to go that route. Roberto, however, also mentioned that he was testing a new soup, Caldo de Patron. My wife asked if she could have a small sample, but he said they make the soup to order and there was none prepared. We decided to go out on a limb and try it (15.00 for a portion which is literally enough for a meal for 2-3) so I opted against the lobster as I was still planning to order an entrée to go with the soup.
It took them about 30 minutes to prepare, and boy was it worth the wait. The soup was delivered piping hot with lime, onion, jalapeño, and fresh cilantro on the side. The broth reminded of a Mexican posole. It had a tomato chipotle base which contained just enough chipotle to remove the sweetness from the tomato, yet it was not extremely spicy. Roberto also told us that he put a splash of Patron in, but the flavor was distinctly apparent. The soup contained generous portions of shrimp, white fish filet, potato, and carrot. We added the onion, lime, and a good bit of fresh cilantro opting out of the jalapeno. Fabulous is a good way to describe the ultimate result.
For the entrée my wife ordered the filet al mojo de ajo again (see my description above), and I opted for the jaibos (crabs) mojo de ajo style. I got 4 to 5 crabs, main shell removed, that were likely boiled, split, and then sautéed in a sauce of butter and minced garlic. The result was the breast and claw meat had a nice buttery garlic flavor, but the meat itself was not drenched in butter masking or diluting its wonderful natural flavor. Since the crabs are sautéed in the butter sauce I made quite a mess of myself handling them. As a crab lover I found this dish wonderful, yet not extremely filling. I had ordered this with the soup in mind, but had I just ordered it by itself I would have still been a bit hungry. It was only 11.00 which is not bad for 4 to 5 crab anywhere.
We washed all of this down with water and apple soda, and this time we ordered the churros rellenos for desert. These were similar to what you may find at many Mexican restaurants. This variation was a pastry filled with vanilla custard (raspberry was also a temporary option), fried, and topped with cinnamon and sugar. They were arranged around a large dollop of cream. Much like the rest of the meal I found them particularly appetizing. All of this came to 42 bucks, which is not bad considering the 15.00 soup. We had two decent sized portions left, one of which I am getting ready to eat for lunch right now. Service was great and much like last time we were the only ones in the restaurant on this Thursday evening between 6 and 8.
