Geeze, why do you wanna bust my balls? Do you not have anything else better to do? Go down to Southern TX, NM, AZ and CA and just find out HOW much in common there is. I have been there so I do know. In many places down there a white American will be in the minority. Excuse me for saying I am going to an Afghani place next week and will report on it for Gayle. This is my last post on said topic.
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

When I was in grad school, I ate at a Paki cabdriver place a couple of times a week because it was good and because it was something I could afford that wasn't ramen noodles. It seems a lot like Indian food to me. But I might just be an ugly American, so who knows.

FWIW, I understand what you mean by Paki but from my last visit to England, that term wasn't an endearing word to describe Pakistani people. As a matter of fact, it was a pretty mean term to use towards all people from that general area of the world.

The term "Paki" is regarded as ethnically derogatory...just ask young Prince Harry, who got into some hot water a couple months ago for using the word to describe a Pakistani member of his army unit (that kid always seems to be stepping into it)....

Sorry to use a derogatory term. That's not cool.

On the other hand, the name of the restaurant was actually "Paki Halal Restaurant," so there's at least that in my defense.

That's a good defense.
From what understand about the term, while it's not regarded as racially or ethnically inflammatory as the "N-word", it is considered by many (mostly Pakistani, I suspect) as demeaning....probably tantamount to calling a Native American, "Chief" or "Tonto"....that sort of thing.

Heh ... "probably" is a broad term when you're guessing at something you don't know, young feller. However, the Muslim Chinese region in sparsely populated Western China, adjacent to several of the -stan countries, DOES bring us the amazing Cumin Lamb that many of us have enjoyed at Red Pepper and Jasmine and, with chicken subbed for the lamb, at Liang's ... )

Actually I've heard that Uighur (also spelled Uyghur) cuisine is similar to some aspects of Afghan cuisine (which is kind of a misnomer considering how many ethnic groups live in Afghanistan, but that's a whole 'nother topic). Unfortunately, though, I haven't had the former. There is supposedly a good Uighur restaurant out in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, but I never got a chance to dine at it before I left New York.

It also seems, though, that it is centered in British/Canadian culture. Racial slurs are culturally specific. So no civilized person in the US will use the word "colored," but it is a normal term in South Africa (although they are slowly moving away from it largely because of the US usage). The recent flap with Prince Harry may render it a slur everywhere.
