Hagan, are you going to ruin my good reputation just for your amusement?

I notice Michael Sells didn't show up for our duel (so I won by default). Maybe we need to schedule another duel.

I knew that they weren't Sabrett's. I'm also from NJ and do, on occasion, order a box of them from a place in NJ and split the box with a friend of mine also from back east.

I never got into ketchup on a hot dog. I laughed about the glass of milk with the corned beef sandwich. One thing that always tells me NOT to order corned beef at a restaurant is when they serve it with lettuce, tomato, and mayo. Mayo is great on the right things, but corned beef? Yikes!

   KETCHUP!!!!OMG no way. If theres one thing thats not on a Chicago dog its ketchup! At one point Daley(Mayor) made a lighthearted proposal to ban ketchup from any hotdog stand in the city, but relented as it is good on fries. Also, as already mentioned its Vienna dogs not Sabretts. Gee Deb, If I didnt know any better Id think you were trying to take the sh#@ stirring stick away from Phil. :D

Celery salt is a must. You can buy the neon green relish from Lonnies by the jar as well as the sport peppers(both made by Vienna).
A couple of other authentic items on the menu there worth checking out. The Combo(Damen Beef/Sausage) its basically just the italian beef(the Wells St) with a link of good sausage tucked in the beef. Thats my favorite Chicago hotdog stand item. They make a fairly authentic Polish(Maxwell St.) covered with yellow mustard and grilled onions.Having gone to Maxwell st. as a kid and eating the real deal(before the Mayor bulldozed the area for U of C and relocated the market a few blocks away with none of the original vendors)its hard to look at any other polish in the same way,but Lonnies is quite good. They also do a pretty good burger, but when Im there I gotta go with the beef or combo.

There is the truth.
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

Lonnie's is absolutely outstanding.....they have awesome gospel music playing, great conversation, and even better Chicago style "blue-collar" food.....being a New Yorker, I had reservations, but Vienna takes "Top Dog" over Nathan's, IMO.

The only thing ketchup works with is potatoes and maybe eggs. It's certainly does and go with hot dogs, corned beef, burgers, ham, etc. These all require mustard of one type or another, yellow, spicy brown, dijon or whatever else you like. Many a fight and divorce has occurred due to ketchup being put on meat!

Honestly, I haven't been much of a hot dog person since I was a kid. However, I do occasionally enjoy one covered in chili (with beans) or sauerkraut. I'll have to give Lonnie's a shot sometime though.

Having spent my formative years in Chicago, I'd give Lonnie's a nod for authenticity. The true test of any self-proclaimed "Chicago Style" hot dog stand is to just order a dog with everything. If the resulting dog has ketchup on it, the test is a failure and the restaurant an impostor. Lonnie's has always come through with flying colors. And, as mentioned, the dog should be Vienna Beef. I'll give a little lee-way for Red Hot Chicago's products, but that's where it ends.

The only true difference I see is pricing on their dogs. It might not be the case anymore, but it seems like it used to be that almost every other spot in Chicago offered 2 dogs and fries for 2 bucks. Ah, the lunch of champions...

The official word from HotDogChicagoStyle.com:

http://www.hotdogchicagostyle.com/chicagodog.php

According to this I'm still under 18 - that made my week!

I bow to the knowledge of the great Clint Eastwood ( but I'm still gonna eat my Dogs with Ketchup):

"You know what makes me really sick to my stomach? It's watching you stuff your face with those Hot Dogs! Nobody - I mean nobody puts ketchup on a Hot Dog!".
