Dearest cyclopitc gnome to answer your question, the people who sit in the bar at Proof are imported. The owners of Proof are bison farmers, into modern art. So to keep things relatively good looking, exotic looking people are grabbed off the streets of far away locales, dusted off, and glued to Proof's bar seats for your visual entertainment. As eye candy they go great with the excellent food and great service. That said, I must warn you that things dial up a bit over Derby. Proof becomes very international during Derby and Breeder's Cup. (And maybe even during Actor's Humana festival.) Definitely go but consider leaving your shades on while indoors. CD

Funny post...I think I get what you're talking about though. I always feel like putting a bag over my head when I'm there. I'm just not one of the glitterati. However, I've never felt as though anyone looked down at me for being uncool. It's a nice place to go after a show because you can easily walk there from the KY Center. I also like Jeff Ruby's - very nice decor and you can get drinks and an app for a good price.

There's a nice bar at the Galt House also...well, several bars in there...all very different. Al J's has an aquarium running along the bar and some birds in a huge cage. You can look out on the Ohio on one side, and down to 4th st. on the other. the Jockey's Lounge is a nice gentleman's den-like bar that has tons of bourbon. Not sure if that's the right name of the bar. Then there is the one at the top of the Galt House. Tres elegant.

I think some of you might have misinterpreted my comments. I thing Proof is great, and I have always been treated well by everyone working there. I just feel unequal to the clientele that frequents the joint. I love places like Proof and seek them out where ever I travel, be it in the States, Europe, or Latin America. Usually, I can get by acting cool and middle aged sophisticated. Yet, at Proof everyone is so darn good looking, that I am sure I come across as a loser personified. I do notice no one looks in my direction. I think I frighten the people - kinda of like Quasimodo, of whom I do a wonderful imitation when I'm drunk.

The patrician couple to my right were such a correct facsimile of the Kentucky horsey set that I felt I was atavistically back on Ellis Island trying to be admitted to the shores of America. The group to my left were incredibly good looking and appeared to be models for a GQ or Vogue shoot. I almost asked for a bag to put over my head as I knew the "cool" factor of Proof was diminishing as long as I sat at the bar. The conversations I over heard were quite urbane, intellectual, and interesting. I knew better then to interrupt anyone with my usual non-sensical, drunken dribble. My question is this: Where else do these people go in Louisville other then Proof? I have not seen them anywhere else!

I try to avoid crowds of this nature, they're a bad influence on me.

Naaa we're just having fun with you. And in our own odd way letting you know most of Lou. doesn't look like half of Proof's clientele. That's part of the fun of going though. That, the food, the service and I adore the ceiling. CD

Back to the question:
Bistro 301 is a great spot that gets missed. Great food and atomosphere. Phil, given your posts I think you would like the food and I have no affiliation with the place other than knowing the owner Matt Mershon.
Z's Fusion is obviously the new downtown hot spot and as was previously stated Stephen will take great care of you.
Mayan Cafe a bit further down on Market has great higher end latin Cuisine.
Artemesia (I may have spelled this wrong) another great place on Market
Soon to open 732 Social which will be the newest venture for the Ton brothers who own Basa.

Hope this helps!
Kurt
