Mmmm, cheesecake. How was it?

I haven't tried it yet. I just grabbed a drink and then looked at the cake cooler while it was being made. I may try it when I go back.

I am glad the cheesecake is on the low end of the price range because I ordered a small bubble tea and it was over 3 dollars. I think that is pretty steep for tea... even if there are tapioca balls sitting at the bottom of it.

Robin, I just got around to reading your piece from 2006. I really like your use of the phrase, "I got a little tapioca'd out." Ha! As a diehard fan of Orbitz soda, I fully expect to embrace bubble tea once I finally get around to trying it. Maybe at the Zen Tea House tonight. . .

i dont know firsthand, because i havent had their (VTs) bubble tea.
but if its even quasi-made to order from quality loose teas for $3 and a standard glass of iced tea in a restaurant is around $2, i wouldnt have any problem shelling out the extra buck.

I thought that at first also. But then again, my husband said that he would be happy to pay $3 for a standard glass of bubble tea at a restaurant as long as they would fill his glass when he got finished with it without charging for it. To each their own. My husband pays $5 for a Blue Moon. Why he doesnt pay another $2 bucks and get a glass of Whitehaven Sauv. Blanc is beyond me.

I went back last night. The cheesecake is okay, but not really special. The slice is kind of small which is why it costs less. The strawberry milk tea was good though. I still haven't gotten the hang of getting the tapioca finished before I run out of tea though (it's harder than it sounds).

Okay, so I stopped by the Zen Tea House last night after dinner at Havana Rumba (I'll write a separate review about that), and although it was freezing cold, I had my heart set on trying bubble tea. I absolutely love the interiors of the tea house. I think it's totally exquisite, very much up my alley with a good relaxed yet elegant vibe. Coco was there and was very sweet as always, inviting us to go check out the upstairs, which you have to walk outside and walk up some outside steps to get to. The upstairs has been renovated from what was obviously an apartment space before, but with Coco's classy zen touch, it has been transformed into a lovely spot to chill and sip tea. It's filled with rows of floor cushions, low tables, and floor rocker style chairs like this: http://www.demco.com/webprd_demco/produ ... 0871Ad.jpg. I wish I had thought to take some actual pictures up there. It seemed like it would be a great spot for events, like small seminars or classes of some sort.

They explained to me that their bubble tea is somewhat different, but I can happily report that I liked it and I will definitely try bubble tea again! Theirs was made with a thai iced tea base, and blended with ice and I chose the optional mango flavoring. Black tapioca pearls, but not too many, floated in the bottom of the cup. The drink was very icey, almost slushey, but tasty and refreshing. I would like to try the bubble teas at some other places now to see how they are different. I can't wait to get back to the Zen Tea House to try their food and hot tea next time.

Thanks for the review, Laura! I'm glad you enjoyed Zen Tea House, and I'm in 100 percent agreement with you about the look and feel of the place. I want to make my house look like that! I haven't tried the bubble tea yet, but your description of Coco's variation is intriguing. Do go back for a meal - if you viewed a menu, you know it's small plates, affordable, and all vegetarian of course. We've tried quite a number of the dishes already and haven't hit a one that was not a delight.

Watch for LEO tomorrow, I'll have a short review on Zen Tea House coming out (also on LHB of course), along with Marsha's monthly Industry Standard.

I was so very excited to see bubble tea (the first I've known of it in Louisville although I've now learned this is not the first place offering it) come to the River City. Having lived in Flushing, Queens (which is arguably as close to China as you can get on the east coast) I have developed quite the fetish for bubble tea. On a somewhat recent visit to Ithaca I tried to take my husband to a wonderful bubble tea shop there but alas it had closed in the years since I'd been to town.

I love the concept at VTs and the service was friendly, but our hot tea (admittedly my first hot bubble) was a bit too reminiscent of milk powder and synthetic flavorings. I plan to return again and try the cold teas but we were quite put off by the flavors of our first trip there. We'll see...

I've enjoyed all of the cold drinks I've gotten, but I must confess to not having bubble tea anywhere else so it may not be as good. I just got a chocolate milk tea from there two hours ago.

Yay, I finally made it in this place! I got a small strawberry milk iced bubble tea for $3.17. I didn't mind paying 3 bucks for a fun, festive beverage, and I thought it was delicious! It was light pink in color, and it had a subtle sweetness to it. It tasted like a treat but not a crazy indulgence. I was worried that it might be overly sweet like soda but it was very mildly sweetened. I loved the pink color of it, but I can't exactly say it was distinctly strawberry flavor. When drinking it, I have this weird thing of only wanting a tapioca pearl or 2 at a time but sometimes they just shoot through the straw one after the other and you just want to taste the drink a little bit! Overall, it was nice and refreshing, tasty, and even fun. My kind of drink! No time for no haters, Marsha! :P

Never thought Id fine a tea shop or a boba place as we call it back out here in Louisville. But yeah the selection is great. The avocado milk tea is my favorite.
