Now for non-chains...

Ti Couz in San Francisco....EXCELLENT! They are known for their variety and quality of crepes. I'd go there for all three meals.

Manuel's in Phoenix, AZ (Well it is a local chain)- Mexican in Phoenix. Need I say more?

Some of my favorites

by David Lange » Wed Apr 25, 2007 4:14 pm

Although I'm not big fan of chains either, there are some concepts that I have eaten at, that perform a remarkable job.

1. First Watch- a breakfast, brunch & lunch concept out of Florida. The closest location to Louisville is in Covington.

2. Paradise Bakery- a great bakery and lunch concept out of Aspen, Colorado. Our closest location is in Indianapolis.

3. McCormick & Schmick's- Based in Portland, this seafood restaurant does a great job with fish and other seafood. Nearest one is in downtown Cincinnati.

4. Pappadeux's- Another seafood restaurant with a cajun flair based out of Houston, Texas. Nearest one is in Cincinnati

5. Atlanta Bread Company- Very similar to Panara, but with more choices, this Atlanta based company has locations in Lexington.

6. Cheeseburger In Paradise- A concept from the Outback people, it is famous for for great cheeseburgers, great drinks and funky atmosphere. You can find one in Indianapolis and also Cincinnati.

7. Flemings- Steaks and wine or their specialties. Who could ask for more. Indianapolis sports an awesome one.

These are just a few, but I notice that both Cincinnati and Indianapolis seems to be getting their share, while they avoid Louisville. Probably because of all the great independant restaurants we sport here. Keep up the great work Louisville Originals.

Burgers and Ice Cream

I too would like to have an In-n-Out Burger. Count me in the fan column.

A Ben and Jerry's would be a nice addition.

Milano's Atlantic City Subs is a mini-chain in Dayton, OH that I crave weekly. It was a staple in my college days.

Submarine House is another Dayton mini chain I miss. We have no good grilled sub places here. It's a huge vacuum in the Louisville market.

Donato's Pizza is the best chain pizza out there. I've written them trying to get a store here.

Quaker Steak & Lube would make a fine alternative to BW3, as would Fricker's, both of which you can find in OH, IN and PA.

I'm sure there are more, but those would satisfy me for the forseeable future....

Mon Ami Gabi would be a huge hit here. It's a real small French bistro chain with a couple of restaurants in Chicago and one in Vegas. I would be there at least once a week for a butter lettuce salad and steak frites w/ merlot butter. Their frites are fantastic.

The Elephant Bar, which we ate at in Scottsdale/Phoenix, AZ. I thought the 2 meals I had there were very good and the atmosphere is unique.

Oh yeah! I ate at the one in Fremont, CA. Yeah, that's a very nice restaurant!

I think their food is Polynesian, if my memory serves.

Yes a real NY area deli would be great!

Some friend rave about YAYA's chicken in Tampa & Detroit.

There is a deli from Miami Beach, that slips my mind. But I will not forget the pickles, the pastries they bring to your tables.

Speaking of Robert Z

"Even though your taste buds are nonexistant"

Steve, although you do not share some of Roberts thinking on food, I believe that the above is pretty much a personal attack on him. I do understand that not everyone here thinks that steaks should be well done, etc, I think you are very close to a personal insult to him.

I do not believe that is a good thing.

Carlos and Charlie's like the one in Cozumel! They would never get away with it in the states though....all the impromptu nudity and extreme drunkenness. I have some great stories and even better pictures from there, lol.

I agree about In-n-Out. A Double-Double with grilled onions, hold the fast-food tomato, is a great burger for $2.50. They're only located in California, Nevada, and Arizona, so I'm not holding my breath on this one.

Fatburger is another great burger chain. And they're open 24-hours.

I would like to see House of Blues and their Sunday Gospel Brunch come to town. Like they say, "Praise the Lord and pass the biscuits."
