Re: Best Kitchen Shoes? for clocking some miles...

Been a large fan of Dansko's for years. Usually get a year and a half with a pair. But last time I ordered them, they were about 1/2 inch shorter and skinnier than my old pair. Despite being the same style/size (printed on the actual shoe). I handed them off to a baker with slightly smaller feet than me for a birthday present rather than deal with returns etc. Recently I switched to MBTs, which are god awful expensive, but worth every penny. The sole of the shoe is curved, and has a very natural walking motion that propels you forward. I'm a 275 pound overweight dude, and with my Dansko's after a 14 hour shift, my feet were done for the evening. Now, I get home, and don't mind a night out because my feet feel great.

The major problem I have with them, is that because of the curved sole, pivoting on the line feel very unnatural. You don't get to do it off the balls of your feet, you do it from the center, which takes some getting used too. It sucked for the first month or so until I got used to the new motion. If you're interested in a pair (and for all shoes actually). Check out the local Zappo's outlet every so often. My set were 300 marked down to 130, and there was another set of MBTs in my size marked down to 85 (but I didn't like the style). I don't know if I could recamend them at their retail price of 300ish, but if you snag them at 60%-70% off, their a great deal.

Thanks for all the advice, the funny thing is moments after my original post, my soon to be better half suprised me with a pair of dansko clogs. I walked around the house for a bit and found them to tall in the heel like I was going to roll my ankel. I suppose as with any new shoe it takes some getting use to. On the advice of someone I work with and has been in bus for many moons I orderd a pair of Merrell clogs. I knew they made a good hiking boot but didn't think about them making a clog. I have always sworn by Shoes for Crews, I think that they have a "crocs" style shoe out now...

I've been fond of the Birkenstock Gardening clog for about 15 years and have worn out about 4 pairs and 10 sets of the cork insoles. I find them quite comfortable on my very flat feet...... and the non slip factor is a big plus!!!!

However, most of my crew has been very happy with the Croc Bistro which I'll probably switch over to because they don't have an insole to wear out!

I love you, Mario Batali - but don't think I will ever wear Crocs! They seem flimsy, inflexible, not very supportive and clunky/clumsy.

I have been through two pair of Dansko and one pair of Dr. Marten's. I loved the Danskos, but agree with others that since Sanita no longer makes them exclusively, they are not the same (and not as big by Euro size). I love my Docs - they are black with white line drawings of kitchen utensils on them - really comfortable, except that I lost some weight and they got a lot bigger and therefore also clunky/clumsy.

I'm still looking. But Crocs don't feel both comfortable AND safe to my feet and ankles. But then again until my current pair I swore by backless clogs - and now (since I've been wearing them) I can see the appeal of full-back clogs.

Re...those ugly shoes on springs you saw Michele. I heard about them through a friend. I've been running for years, but started having bad pain in my left knee. Finally, I had a chance to try the ZCoils and they are AMAZING. They have a rigid orthotic built into the shoe, a steel coil spring in the back to absorb shock and a thick foam in the front. The retailer told me they are selling them like hotcakes to airport workers, nurses and others who are on their feet. They take about a week to get used to...however, after 2 years of pain I can walk/jog again with no joint problems. They do get a lot of laughs, but hey, I feel like I'm walking on a trampoline with them. You can't buy them here yet....you need to be fitted, so be careful about buying them on ebay. There is a dealer in Cinci and a couple in Indiana. The IN store bought a truckload to the Marriott East a month ago. It's worth looking into them.
