Wow, Rax, that's a name I haven't heard in a long time. I loved Rax. Back in the 80's I lived off Fern Valley Road and frequented the Rax on Preston. They had the best salad bar, the best baked taters and NO fast food sandwich has yet to beat the Beef, Bacon and Cheddar they served. There is still a semblence of Rax in the Ville. On top of a roof on one of the old buildings along West Main there is still a faint image of their logo. I used to look down upon it when I was employed by Humana.

"RAX" was a roast beef QSR chain (a la "Arby's").....I also recall a similar chain called "JAXX" (I'm not making this up, Carla)...they had some locations in the southern part of the state (e.g., Bowling Green), but not sure if any made it to Louisville -- anyone remember??

"Lums" -- YUMS!!

Hot dogs steamed in beer....the last one I remember was next to the UofL campus (3rd & Eastern Pkwy)....the building still exists, but is now used by the Speed School....

I remember the one off Bardstown Rd, at Goldsmith Lane. They turned it into a chinese restaurant. (The one with the sign on Bardstown Rd. The sign was so hysterical cause it had what looked like 2 pandas copulating.)

The place was named Happy Pandas.(the happy came from the mating pandas on the sign) Well, that was the nickname. It was my fave Chinese place back in the 80's. Well, maybe #2 after the Empress just down the road.

I'm trying to skip the ones mentioned so far for 2008, forgive me if I accidentally repeat one or mention one I thought went out in 2008 but went out in 2007.
Another factor may be if you consider a closing to count if it is still a restaurant in some form, as has been noted ex: Rocky's / Buckhead:
Camille's, the wrap place on Hurstbourne, not the other one
Fire Fresh BBQ 3065 Breckinridge Ln
Lemongrass on B'town Rd doesn't count 'cause it was more like a resurrection (La Que)
Lentini's last gasp incarnation, and a pretty darned good menu if you ask us
Los Aztecas on Taylorsville Rd in J'town was absorbed into the El Tarasco folks
Los Indios, two Hispanic run places in So. Ind, Chas'tn Rd & Highlander Pt. The latter became another El Nopal, not vacant. Not sure the status of the other bldg.
Napa River Grill - OK, gone from Dupont but moved out beyond the rim of the Earth so might as well be closed (gripe, gripe)
Omar's Gyro 969-1/2 Baxter Ave
Rick's Ferrari Grille - don't recall if that was late 2007 or early 2008
RockWall 3426 Paoli Pike Floyds Knobs IN - the folks in the neighboring overpriced McMansions likely stopped eating there shortly before moving into a trailer park
Royal India 4123 Oeschi Ave
Sahara 3701 Lexington Rd 5/31/08
Sala Thai 9114 Taylorsville Rd (Stoneybrook) July 2008
Steinert's Tavern 2239 Chas'tn Rd, New Albany IN - 5/05/08. Open since 1877, OK they burned down, but it ain't back in biz as far as I know.
Sweet Peas 2350 Frankfort Ave - Feb 2008
Hope this helps assess the losses.

The real loss is what has happened to most Americans over the last 8 years. I lost my job. Has anyone else? Even if you haven't, has your lifestyle changed?

Last eight years? Hmm, fell in love, got married, saw my dad die from cancer, welcomed our son into the world, struggled as a small business owner in a overloaded field (printing) to stay afloat, beat depression, got to welcome a neighbors son back from OEF twice, found lots of cool 'new to us' places to eat because of this forum, became a donor, and found time to ride more than 150 different roller coasters. Ups and downs, but life goes on. I also can't discount my personal stress reduction program of things I cut out or down on: not believing what the drive-bys say, TV in general but racing in particular, and finding a way to laugh more at life/myself.
Liberalism is a 'no brainer'.

Wow, had no idea that Nio's had closed. Has it been that long that my wife and I went there and were treated like royalty, with food to match? Very sad.
