Since we moved back to Louisville three years ago - after 35 years in Rochester NY - we have entertained many of our old New York friends. This past week we had a couple with us for a few days, folks who travel the world frequently and have pretty high standards. We had dinner at Le Relais( My God, it was perfect!), lunches at Cafe Classico, Shiraz, Third Ave Cafe (trying to hit range of prices and types), served them Jackson's Organic, wandered downtown - 21C, the Museum Plaza mock-up, the Main Street museums; Joe Ley and NuLu, Old Louisville, especially St. James and Belgravia; Cave Hill, the Olmstead Parks and the surrounding neighborhoods... It was just a couple of days, but it was enough to wow our friends, as others have been in the past.
We have become such boosters since our return. We love this city - its range, its contrasts, its beauty, its surprises, its weirdnesses... Despite my, uh, age, I am a big indy music fan. Our friends got in last Saturday. I had spent that whole day at the incredible - and wonderfully strange - Terrastock festival. I made friends with folks from Chicago, New York, Denver (the audience was about 80% out-of-towners). Saturday I was grooving on the lawn at funky Mellwood Arts Center; Sunday I was dining at Le Relais. And it all seemed so right and so Louisville.
Yep, liveable.
