Looks like all of the local stations have picked up on this story...even CNN and Fox had it on there websites..Looks as if over 100 people have become sick and they are checking on one the after being admitted into the hospital having the same symtoms died....

No offense, Robert, but that's a "staph" infection....staphylococcus... could have been a member of the "staff" or a pimply customer scratching then touching the food.....

GOOD GRIEF! Look at the mistakes in that WHAS link! Twice it said "there" instead of "their" and "persons which" instead of "people who." ROBIN...are they using third graders?

Oh, please don't start me on another "corner-cutting corporate media" rant!

Did they get "staph" right?

well..."staph" is acceptable. However, they keep using the term 'bacterium" which bothers me. That is the singular and one will not create a problem. The bacteria (pl) will however. Technically, describing it as a bacterium may be correct, but I thibk they should talk about the plural in regards to outbreaks. JMHO

Latest news on Claudia's.

by Doogy R » Thu Apr 03, 2008 11:00 pm

Staph infected patrons at Claudia Sanders. It looks like it may have been a ham.

Health officials have confirmed that staph bacteria caused illness among more than 130 diners at Claudia Sanders Dinner House in Shelbyville, and they said the strain of bacteria found in ham served at the restaurant matched the strain in stool samples from some people.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is further analyzing samples of the packaged hams that remained unopened after the Easter buffet to determine if the problem with staphylococcus aureus is more widespread, according to a statement released tonight by officials at the North Central District Health Department.

I started thinking about this topic over the weekend and thought I'd ask all the experts here for their opinion. I originally saw the general manager of Claudia Sanders interviewed on TV a few days after Easter at the time she was saying that it was the ham that was the problem, and that it showed that Claudia Sanders wasn't to blame, that it was the fault of the company which made the ham.

I see that the Courier-Journal story says that they're still trying to figure out if the staph infection came from someone at the restaurant or from the ham packing company or whatever those places are called.

Now wouldn't they be recalling all of the hams from that particular food company if the hams had been tainted at the packing facility? I haven't seen any recalls on ham so that made me wonder. Are people out there consuming hams from the same place without knowing that the meat could carry a staph bacteria?

Hope this post makes sense. I just started wondering about that since they haven't said for sure who is/was at fault.

It's really disturbing, regardless, because I bet that Claudia Sanders has lost a tremendous amount of business since the incident. I know that I, personally, won't be able to stomach eating there ever again. I get the heebie-jeebies after something like that happens and it makes my stomach turn to even think about eating at the restaurant in question again. But that makes me sad since it's such an institution. Hopefully everyone won't be like me.

I doubt it was just one ham. probably contaminated from handling by employee at the restaurant who is colonized with staph and didn't wash hands.

Noticed on the way to Science Hill on Sunday that the parking lot at Claudia's was almost empty at 11:50 ..... not a good sign, IMO.

We were just there the other day and it was packed.

Shelby County doesn't have much happening in it until way after noon on Sundays. Most church services don't let out until 12 or 12:30.
