Robert, here is my quote from the top of the thread:

I do think Norton Commons is a good idea

but nothing. It's a good idea.

would I rather see all that money being spent in the Old Louisville that already exists? Yes.
Is that gonna happen? No.
Is that because of race and class issues? Yes.
Is that unfortunate? Yes.
Does that opinion make me an elitist? I guess it depends on who you ask.

Excuse any mistakes/weird things with my post (my first on the new system!) as I am still trying to "get" some things straight. (Particularly the 'nested' subject lines?)

Anyway, right on Ron!! You're dead on when you squished the "elite" thing right away. Empty words; empty arguments. I just turn my ears off when someone attempts to pull the elite card.

And, secondly, I fully agree with you in that NC is a good idea but the money (oh, the money!) spent there would be better spent in the 'hoods that the development is trying to emulate. Again, emulation is not necessarily a bad thing (FWIW, I really liked the pic of Karem's). However, the sanitized, ethnically cleansed NC comes closer to "elitism" than anthing else, IMHO.

Robert claims that many here believe that nothing "can be done right in the burbs". Well, things (such as NC) might be able to be "done right". But I'm not sure if the suburban ideal can ever achieve 100%, er... "rightness" at least in my mind.

Aren't urban planning issues supposed to be on the other forum? :?: Just kidding, I've always loved how food discussions can morph into other things and am in favor of letting topics mix.

Well just as you want the money spent in the "HOODS"...There are people in the "BURBS" that would like the money spent here...So I guess that both are right.....  :o

I spend money in the 'hood, and I spend money in the 'burbs. I just try not to spend money in corporate chains, but I still do that from time to time. So much for my elitism.

Give me a break

by Jon K » Wed Mar 28, 2007 1:22 pm

Ron: Please go lie down a bit. I'm a card carrying leftie liberal ACLU, NOW member. However, I think it's possible for people of any political view to express elitist attitudes. I think there is a strong tendency of some people on this board to get side tracked about social issues that have no bearing on the food. What came through loud and clear to me this morning was that Karem's may be a good place, but 'tis a pity it's wasted on the Potemkin village known as NC. No one implied you don't patronize good inexpensive restaurants, just that you look down on the ones that locate in areas you dislike. Get over it. As for the Limbaugh comment, I'll let that pass once, but one more such foul canard and it's sabers. :D

I guess it's OK to stereotype as long as you do it from a liberal viewpoint? Developments like Norton Commons don't simply happen due to "race and class issues." Is it that hard for you to believe that people might want to live in a new home rather than sink money into an older one? Just because they don't share your same values regarding urban renewal doesn't mean there is anything at all wrong with what they are doing.

I live in eastern Jefferson county because I work out in this area and wanted an affordable house with a yard. I didn't select the location because I'm scared of people with less money or darker skin.

I had lunch today at Karem's and really enjoyed it. Nice atmosphere, great sandwich & fries, and friendly service. I hope they're successful.

Jon: If you want to debate zoning regulations, Norton Commons, or the food at Karem's, I'll be happy to do so. But, I am not interested in responding to comments directed at me personally like "go lie down", "get over it", and that I am some sort of elitist.

I've heard nothing but good things about Karem's. I too wish them the best.

Thank you for sharing why you have chosen to live in the area that you do, but none of my posts were directed at you personally.
