Ahhhhhmmmmm....speaking as a disinterested observer, it sure as hell looks like this guy has bigger and better plans than either (A) what currently sits there or (B) a parking lot.

I didnt see the irony in your post, it seemed you were serious. Or maybe you were going with the Alanis definition or something.

And here's some "irony": Parking lots are a good thing when parking is in demand.

Which isn't the case in downtown Louisville, and hasn't been, probably, for decades. You can walk around downtown in the middle of any workday and find multiple lots and garages that are nowhere near capacity.

For reference, here's downtown Louisville. Red is surface parking lots; purple is parking structures. Between parking and the growing-as-we-speak elevated freeways, there's not much left, and even less that's historic.

The map Jeff posted just under yours pretty much says it all.

I can understand the preservationist perspective when you look at what downtown is now compared to what it was. The old pics were amazing and most or all of that is gone. How this city would KILL for that kind of vibrant downtown nowadays... But... now it seems, this city is almost desperate for downtown commerce and we have neglected so much over the years, then we have to rebuild or even tear down things... it's a vicious cycle but I am in support of this hotel. The downtown bridge? Oh that's another story entirely. I work literally right next to the construction and I despise it.

Nahhh man, I wasn't doing irony...I was serious. Based solely on information in the article, which is all I have to go on, there doesn't seem to be anything remotely "historic" about that decrepit old building...Thus even a popcorn stand would be a likely improvement.

Now I WILL say this...if outward appearances mean anything at all, it looks like a great place for a Brewery. :? :P

Bringing mid-20th century technology to a 21st century city? What's not to like?

I do find it interesting that the chain-owned daily newspaper has made zero effort to dig into which specific corporations and individuals stand to profit the most from this multi-billion dollar project, and what their role has been in pushing it against considerable public opposition.

Who remembers Urban Renewal?

The reason most of Downtown degenerated is because the Government decided that it new better how to use private property better than private citizens. The historical preservation movement is largely a response to that. See, with government programs, you always need another one to fix what went wrong with the last one. The only constant is that the Government and busybodies, always, ALWAYS, know better what to do with private property than the actual owners do.

What this really shows, is that many are quite pleased to use the force of Government to privilege their views over others. You see it right here in this thread, where the property might be a good candidate for a historical designation, except that the developer is planning a suitably "European" concept, so "never mind".

Now. What is to be done about the proposed NuLu Family Dollar store? Heaven forbid the Hoi Polloi have a place in NuLu. That is straight out of the question! An emergency meeting must be called! Sure, we desperately need retail Downtown, but one must have standards. Otherwise, we'll have the wrong sorts of folks hanging around, and the New Yorkers and Europeans might not think we are cool enough.

Says the fan of 19th Century rail technology.

BTW, I think the downtown bridge should have came after building the East End 265 bridge and then reevaluating. The rich peeps who need investigating are the River Fields ones who have been fighting that for 40 years as a threat to their genteel way of life. They are why we have this multibillion dollar dual bridge monstrosity. And yes, one of the biggest culprits is John Yarmuth, man of the people.

Yes yet former mayor Abrahmson is arguably the biggest culprit.

...not to mention a 255 million dollar tunnel under an "Estate" with very little (if any) REAL historical value. I started hearing about "River Fields" when I moved here 5 years ago and my first impression was that here were a bunch of rich folks (with absolutely ZERO concern for anything accept for what they owned) who were doing a good job of stirring up various deep breathers and tree huggers in an effort to stop something that would be a great benefit to the entire community. I can't say that I've seen much in the past five years that would change this initial impression.
