I've always considered hipster to mean someone who tries way to hard too look like they're not trying at all.

Let's all crack another PBR in celebration

We didn't get the hipster vib in Portland, but Asheville is teeming with hipsters and just plain old hippies.

"Old" being the key word there Justin. :D ....The place is full of people who look like they left the east coast for California back in the 60's and then ran out of gas somewhere around Asheville.

The drum circle the hippies put on during Fri. nights is quite entertaining.

I don't get all the "hipster hate". It's like they are the modern day version of what punk rock was. Outcast kids with little direction who don't want to be a part of "normal" society and are trying to make their own reality in some sort of subversive sense. But really, hipsters like good food, music, coffee, support local businesses.. I am confused on what's wrong with them. I don't see a problem. I would rather live next to a hipster family than a family led by a mean redneck any day of the week. Plus, when was the last time a hipster mob beat someone half to death over a collectors edition Golden Girls themed banjo or for any reason at all? They are generally kind, young kids who want new and interesting stuff. Again, I don't see a problem.

I think its more poking fun rather than hate.
They embody the crowd that typically only listens to bands you have never heard of, and pointedly take pride in it. As if being obscure=musical ability.

In the 50's and early 60's our (my) grandparents rolled their eyes and cast disparaging remarks at the youth of the day and their affection for talentless artists likes of Elvis Presley and their affinity for things like hot rods, blue jeans and black leather jackets...in the late 60's and early 70's our (my) parents rolled their eyes and cast disparaging remarks at the youth of the day toward their affection for talentless artists like The Beatles and the Rolling Stones and their affinity for things like bell bottoms, flowered shirts and homegrown cigarettes (witness this picture of moi, circa 1972)

It's now the 2010's...and I'll be damned if I'm going to miss my opportunity to roll my eyes and cast disparaging remarks toward the youth of today and their affection for talentless artists like Mumford and Sons and their affinity for excessive tattoos and body piercings. 8) ......

Yeah but are hipsters really the "youth" of the day? I thought it was more of a millenial 20's to mid 30's thing?

Steve, is that a Red Stripe you are drinking there?

Oh, and if my short venture into the Vint on Frankfort Ave is any indication, hipsterism is flourishing here in Louisville! Absolutely bohemian.

Confession time: The photo they used for Louisville in the piece was lifted off MY flickr account. I snapped that 3 years ago at Mag Bar. I'm either flattered 8) or embarrassed  depending on your reaction.
