Imagine 2 or 3 plump oysters which have been encased in a baseball size mass of bread dough -like stuff then rolled in cracker crumbs and deep fried. Devine. I really do like raw oysters best but this is my second favorite way to eat oysters. They are good when you just can't wait for oyster dressing at Thanksgiving.

Doug Davis wrote:So being a Florida boy, born and raised, and having grown up with oysters raw, steamed, stewed, broiled, fried and cooked into all manner of dishes such as stuffing...is there some specific difference to this local phenomenon called a rolled oyster versus a normal friend oyster?

The Mazzoni family opened a New Orleans-style oyster bar here back in the 1860s, when getting fresh seafood the far inland would have been a feat if not for high-speed ice cars roaring up from the Gulf on the old L&N.

The rolled oyster is actually several oysters rolled in a thick cornmeal porridge called "Pastinga" in Italian, then breaded and deep-fried to a baseball-size sphere that's crunchy on the outside, while the liquidy interior thickens to a pudding while steaming the oysters, which give back their juices to the pastinga.

It's an acquired taste, but a good one.

The only thing about it that puzzles me is that the Mazzonis always claimed it was an old country dish, but I've traveled fairly extensively in Italy, and spend a lot of culinary time in Liguria (Genoa) where I believe the were from, and I have never seen anything remotely like it over there. :?

Come and get 'em! We've got great-looking fresh Chesapeake Bay oysters and we are rolling again. Hand-made Rolled Oysters are now available at the Hurstbourne, St. Matthews and Middletown locations - For A Limited Time. Thanks

Here's the review I wrote of Home Run's rolled oyster back when Bob and Kathy first introduced it in 2011:
