Lunch at Cochon, and dinner at either Irene's Cuisine or SoBou.

Lunch at Felix's and dinner at Casamento's.

(I know, both oyster-centric places, but that's how I roll)

For a funky lunch, might I suggest Root? http://rootnola.com/menus/lunch-menu/ Check out that charcuterie program...

It would be worth the splurge for dinner also but I guess it depends on how you feel about the style of cuisine. It is very much the "new guard" of the city.

I'm seconding the recos for Bayona - beautiful location off the craziness of the Quarter, and for Cochon - all hail all things pig! I'll add another - Herbsaint. Had a wonderful meal there. No matter where you go, though, you'll have a fab time! Happy Early Birthday!

I grew up in New Orleans and you all are bringing tears to my eyes! There is very little bad food there unless you get into one of the tourist traps.

Domilise's is my sentimental favorite for a true Nawlins lunch - get the poboys takeout and drive over to Audobon Park, and have a picnic for the complete experience.

I'm going to add Pascale's Manale Restaurant for dinner. Authentic BBQ shrimp, a great fresh oyster bar, and amazing entrees.

The newer restaurants like Couchon and any of chef John Besh's establishments are a low risk choice, but the old line places have real atmosphere.

If you can, try to watch Anthony Bourdain's show, The Layover. His New Orleans episode is priceless. There are also some good videos on the show's website.
