Madeline Peters wrote:I have to say the Yamaguchi restaurant caught my eye. There are a lot of sushi restaurants in Louisville but they are so focused on their "roll" offerings. They do not serve sushi but offer excellent sashimi on the weekend. They typically get varieties of fish that you would not find anywhere outside of Japan.

For sushi in Lexington, you should check out Sugano. It is in a shady strip mall but don't let that fool you; they serve some seriously great sushi. I've tried fugu here; giant oysters; rare varieties of clam - the selection is very good. There are hand-written menus on the walls (in Japanese, of course). If you ask the waitresses what the specials are, they will gladly inform you. Sugano-san will love you if you buy him a beer...

To me, the Japanese fare in Lexington is perhaps the only reason to leave Louisville.

Doodles is fantastic but it's just a breakfast place.

Doodles also has lunch. Alfalfa is a great little place for healthy fare. Wow, I like Jonathan's, but it is high. The Jean Faris Winery and Bistro is very good, IMO.

Oops, I forgot to add that while Coals is amazing, Lexington's Smashing Tomato was the first certified Neopolitan pizza place in Ky, and they have 3 locations now. Their food is awesome .

I remember Smashing Tomato Pizza. You're correct, their pizza is good.
